Postby jdbuckshot » Tue Dec 28, 2010 8:10 am

I'm headed to the San Jaun National Forest September 2011 for a 10 day DIY Elk hunt.

Any one have input on a good pair of boots? i aint spending $300, so some where from $100-$175 would be my range.

any input on the 8" Danner Non insulated Pronghorns?

Whatever brand you get make sure they are waterproof, have Vibram soles, & fit well! I made the mistake of going cheap and getting none of those qualities, and my feet paid for it! Merrell makes a good hiking boot that are around $120

I've chased elk 2 out of the last 3 years in the Danner Pronghorn. Doesn't quite have the support as some of the true hiking boots, but I love mine. Very lightweight.

Whatever you do, break them in good. Wear them the Summer before going doing yard work, walking the neighborhood, anything to get them good an broke in prior to going. Wearing brand new boots for the first time on a western hunt no matter how good the quality sucks. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. :)

Check out the boots at www.schnees.com

Much like the L.L. Bean style, but much heavier duty and warm.

I hunted last year in Vasque hiking boots with Vibram soles. They were perfect. My feet actually still got hot at times.........but never got wet and my feet never did hurt. I'd take a Peet Boot Dryer as well.

I bought the Merrell Phaser Peak for my trip last year and they were great. Lightweight, good support, vibram soles, waterproof, etc... You can get them at o2gearshop.com for $80 (most websites sell them for $140.) I got mine several months ahead of time to make sure they would be broken in good, but they were comfortable the first time I wore them.

edit: Just checked o2 and that deal is only for certain sizes.

For the price range you're speaking of you aren't going to bet Danner Pronghorn, I have two pair one insulated and one non insulated
Like others have said, make sure they are broke in good before you get there and don't skimp on socks

I've been in the area you are going before( may go back in 2011 haven't decided yet) and you better have your self in shape as well as the boots

He's not lying about the getting in shape part. You may think you're in shape, but unfortunately, there is nothing you can do down here to prepare you for the elevation change. Plan on stopping and catching your breath every 10-20 SECONDS, going uphill.

i have a good friend who has killed 6-7 bulls out west and he wears these cabelas boots. he mostly hunts in NM. i don't think it is as rugged as the san jaun mtns.

I've heard of a lot of guys having leak problems with the pronghorns but so far mine have been good
