Hunting the Far North of New Zealand

Postby Sam Newman » Thu Dec 23, 2010 5:54 pm

Hi everyone. Thought I'd introduce myself. I am a hunter living in the Far North of Aotearoa (New Zealand). I hunt Ducks, Parradise Shelduck, Swan, Quail, Turkey, Pheasant, Rabbit, Hares, Possums, Pigs, Goats, Stoats, Rats and Ferrel Cats. I also enjoy Fishing and Diving. Image I am a Possum hunter by trade. I shoot and trap them and pluck their fur to sell to people who make warm clothing from it. I get about $100NZ / Kelogram for the fur. Image I also use the meat for cooking and make sausages from them. View the posts in www.sausagemaking.org I also use it to feed my dogs. They love em and are very healthy. Image The Possums we get here are very different to the ones you guys will be used to eating roadkill and other nasty garbage. Our possums eat the best of our native bush hence they are a tastey pest. Image I am looking after one of the biggest wetlands in the North of NZ. Extreamly good waterfowl hunting. I am targetting the pests to help them breed, policing the boundrys from poachers and help with the recovery and reliese of injured wild waterfowl.

I am staying in a tent in the bush at the moment. Image
I have a small 12v dvd player for entertainment when it is raining or I'm too tired to do any more hunting. I charge the battery from my quadbike or solar pannel.

I cook on an open fire. Remember it's summertime over here guys.

Great to meet everyone here. Havn't been duck hunting for a couple of months, so don't have any recent photos. Open season begins again in May. Here is a pheasant I got and a pig my mate got last week up in the bush.

Thanx for the warm welcome everyone. Will do! The ducks are breeding well this year. Can't wait. I have seen lots of different ducks up here this year. Big Brown Mallard crosses that wern't there last year, Regular Mallards, Parrys, Spoonies and Swans. Im setting a possum trap line in a couple of days, so I will try to get some pictures of some wetlands for you.
