Knife Sharpening

Postby bigoak » Tue Nov 30, 2010 8:32 pm

I cannot sharpen a knife to save my life. Just wanted to see what everyone does to keep their skinning knife sharp? Anyone use an electric sharpener?

Spyderco makes one. Easiest thing in the world. It uses ceramic sticks.

It's not that hard, you just need a good diamond stone and some pratice, the most inportaint thing is to try to to keep the plade as close to the factory angle as possible while working it on the stone. I've been sharpening and makeing blades for nearly 20yrs. and you just have to pratice, it will come to you. Oh , and it dosent take as much pressure as most think, just light pressure the length of the blade will do wonders after just a few strokes. As for the eletric sharpners, those and the carbide sharpners take a lot of metal off your blade and to me seem like the edge is never quite rite after useing them.

I have a lansky that I like. It will keep u at the same angle. I use an electric for my kitchen knives works great but will take some metal off over time.

Nothing works as well as the old-fashioned way using a wet stone. Find someone that knows how and let them teach you. It's kind of enjoyable when you're just sitting around camp or something.

Mrgoodtime and farmweather are Correct!
The "old fashioned" way is the Best way to do it.

It seems that things like Knife sharpening and "spit" shinning your leather shoes, have been lost with the under 30 crowd.

agree with the wet stone route and practice.

As mentioned try to keep the blade angle consistant. A knife is sharp when the edge is straight and it's dull when that edge rolls over. Remember that the sharper the knife is or the better it cuts, the more frequently it will need to be sharpened.

I keep a sharpening rod with me when I'm cleaning something and keep my stone in the house. Once I'm finished cleaning I'll sharpen it at home on a wet stone and save it.

i use a diamond wet stone. As long as the blades aren't to far gone, i can usually get them pretty sharp. i also use a set of crock sticks.

The best way is a soft arkansas whetstone, then a hard arkansas whetstone, then a leather strap to polish out. Then you can shave with it.

Ive got a few different stones and they work ok. The best way I find by far is to keep on of those pull through carbide sharpeners in your closet and hit the blade a few licks once a week or so. Keeping the edge on is much easier than trying to make a whole new edge. I have use a leather strop or belt a few times. It made my knife razor sharp once and the other times it didn't work that well.

My trick is to use diamond stones and never let one get real dull, after I skin a deer one of the first things I do is resharpen my knife it's a lot easier to sharpen one that never got bad dull than to start off with a really dull blade
