Decoy Paint

Postby ducksnbucks07 » Mon Nov 29, 2010 6:19 pm

Just acquired some used decoys from a buddy of mine. Decoys are in good shape just need a little touch up paint as they have seen better days. What have ya'll found to be the best paint for mallards?

First: Be sure to WASH the decoys with Soap (dish soap), before you paint them... get the oils (from human hands) off, so that the paint will stick better.

Guessing the deeks are plastic (polyethelene) so you will do much better with Oil based paints, It will stick better and last much longer.

Parkers decoy paints ( available on-line through Macks and Cabelas) is my favorite... the colors for Mallards are very good.
Of course, any hobby shop probably has something just as good.

Remember, do NOT paint any Blue wing patches on the drakes.... real mallards at rest or feeding do not show any of the blue on their wings.

Good Luck!

God Bless you

Check out the website takeem.com. They go through the steps and proper colors you will need. The paints they suggest are latex paints you can buy at Wal Mart. Ive restored old decoys their way and it works well.

I painted 2 dozen G&H Magnum mallards with Parkers before last season and they held up well. I had not pulled them out of the bag since last season until opening morning and they still looked great. As mentioned, the key is cleaning the decoys well before painting. The only concern I had with the paint is that the green has a little more olive tint than I would like, but otherwise the Parkers paint is great.
