Ole Miss has a good business school, thats where I got my marketing degree from and I thought that the prof's were good. Not the teach if ya can't do types, they brought a lot of real world experience to the classroom. I transferred there from WVU after my sophmore year so in comparison I would rank UM in the 9 range and WVU in the 7 range (which is still a respectable business school).

Benny,

Can't speak for any of the others, but Ole Miss has a very reputable Biz School... As far as in-state choices, it's most likely your best bet.

Oxford would never be the same if BENNY came to town...Don't worry...I'll warn all the sorority girls about the bright-red-headed genius, BEAVER TRAPPIN', duck huntin', anti Republican machine.

But seriously, if your thinking of taking some classes, they offer a lot of Independent Study courses like (MKTG 351 principles)(353 advertising)(354 Buyer Seller Comm)(361 retailing) and others. You can take these anytime thru-out the year.

If you need any other info, just PM me and I'll help you with what I can.

I got my MBA from Ole Miss back in '95 and I skipped more classes than I went to, drank more beer than a fraternity pledge on a forced binge, played enough golf to get my handicap down to an 11, and ran more leg than I knew what to do with. And I finished second in my class.

Yeah, I'd get my MBA from Ole Miss all over again if I could.

Besides, business degrees are insanely overrated. I refer to am MBA as a Master of Barely Anything.

Here's a graduate-level course in business:

Econ:
1. Things cost what they cost
2. Scarcity is only good if someone else wants the damned thing
3. Buy low, sell high

Management:
1. Folks do lots of weird chit
2. We don't know why
3. Draft unintelligible policies to cover every contigency to prevent lawsuits
4. The longer the explanation of a new benefits/salary plan means the employee is getting screwed

MIS:
1. Learn MS-Office
2. Hire consultants at $150 an hour for real work
3. Hire Indian/Pakistani consultants for $30 an hour for programming
4. Apple is only for weird graphics design people

Marketing:
1. Have a good product
2. Location, location, location
3. Lie about how crappy your competition is
4. Mercilessly stalk potential customers until they panic and give in and buy your product

Congratulations - you now know everything you'll need to knwo to ace an MBA course.

PS: For reputations, Millsaps has the best in the state, followed by Ole Miss

Most MBA programs, particularly general MBAs (like the one I have) are geared towards consulting jobs. Accenture (or whatever they call themselves this week), IBM Global Services, PWC, Booz-Allen, Mackenzie, etc. These jobs pay extremely well, but they suck grade-A booty. Think 250 days on the road. I did this type of work for 5 years - travel gets old real quick, although I did rack up over 750,000 frequent-flyer miles on Delta.

If you have a desired career path, I'd go for more of a specialized degree, like a Masters in Finance or something similar. Yes, you limit your post-graduate options to selected fields, but you actually learn a thing or two that's practical.

Dont forget about Mississippi College. Not many people realize it, but I think it 2002 it was voted Best Value. Also i belive in 99 or 98 its business school was recgonized nationally.

MILLSAPS!!

But you gotta go to Jackson. Spent four years inside of the gate of Fort Millsaps and developed an intense love/hate relationship. Loved the school, but then I had to live in downtown J-town.

I didn't major in business, but a bunch of my friends did, including my roommate up here in law school, and they all loved it. The business school has an excellent reputation and good record of placement for its grads.

Benny-- how long ago did you brother die there. I had a few friends that were while at Millsaps. Weird stuff. Some of it was the campus was so close to the Jungle. Others were because some of the jungle creatures had of police uniforms.

Like I said...love/hate. I will say this...after graduating last year, I've been back a couple of times and they seem to have beefed up the security some. The gates don't just stay open all the time like they did when I was there. I imagine that makes things a little safer for the students, but it sure does make it a pain when I want to get in just to say hey to an old buddy.

ps--I've grown quite comfortable with Oxford and Ole Miss since getting here last August.

You should consider MS College. Not only do they have top notch professors, but a BUNCH of graduates have ties to all sorts of business ventures and are willing to help any graduate of MC. I graduated with a degree in chemistry, but I know their business program is pretty good. Plus it is close enough to the delta and surrounding areas to be commutable if need be. Only about 35 min from Yazoo City.
