Just got me a new toy - Rem 700 SPS 7mm08

Postby RDB » Sun Oct 17, 2010 1:10 pm

Just bought me a new toy to play with this year... a Remington 700 SPS 7mm08 in youth. I like the small compactness of the rifle and love the way it handles. I hunted with a .308 just like it years ago and it was sweet shooting and easy to hunt with but Remington quit making the .308 in youth so this is the next closest thing.I topped it off with a Nikon 3 x 9 x 40... Anxious to see how it shoots.

Anybody else got a 7mm08 and if so how do they shoot, take down deer, flat shooting, best loads/combo etc.????

Thanks.

I have that exact gun, even the scope, only it's chambered in .243 and it's a FINE shooting gun!!!! You'll enjoy that gun a lot!!!
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Thanks Dutch Dog... I know I loved the .308 I used to shoot.... I hope the 7mm08 is comparable to the .308 in knockdown and reliability.

In previous years I've hunted with the 30'06,7mmWSM and 257WBY. This year I'm going with a 7-08 and I have no doubt it will be more than enough on deer.
Anything and everything in North America has been killed with 7mm bullets so I don't think a whitetail will be much of a problem.

I got me a new TC Venture in 7-08 the other day. I been shooting a lever 08 for a while and been wanting a bolt instead. I shoot 139 gr. hand loads but my cousin loves the 140 ballistic silver tips in his.

7mm-08 is one of the best all around rounds out there. it is reletivly light in recoil and has plenty of thump on a whitetail. has a variety of factory loads to suit your likes and hunting situation. it is typically good out to 300yrds before it starts dropping to bad for the avg guy to dope the shot. in the right hands it'll go much farther.

i have had a couple of them and loved the way they shot, but i guess i just feel the best and am most confident with my old savage 30-06.

Try the 120 grain HP from Remington.. IMO they are about the perfect deer sized round..

My next firearm purchase will be the Ruger 77 compact in 7mm-08. I like the idea of a compact, easy-to-handle deer gun, too.

i have 700 bld 7mm 08. synthetic stainless, with stainless optics. absolutely love it. i shoot 120 grain core loc by remington, that's what i have found works best out of mine, compared to remington core loc 140 grain and winchester core loc 140 grain. Best gun that i've ever hunted with hands down. aboslutely love it

I have had mine going on 10 years now and wouldn't trade it for anything and my wife shoots a youth model! I shoot 140g Federal Accubonds, but they are getting hard to find so I decided to try the remington Accutip 140g and they have almost identical performance. Most of my kills have been <100yds and I have had zero problems, but I have heard a lot of success stories at 200-250 yds

I have this gun as well. Get a trigger job on it and you will not be dissapointed. I have always like shooting the shorter guns. They are sure easy to get in and out of the stand and through the woods..

Thanks for all the input guys... I think I'm going to try the 140 grain bullets for the gun... I absolutely love the adjustable trigger on the gun... Out of the box the trigger pull is sweeeeeeeeeet !!

I was gonna say the 140 is almost the same as the 308, but then I went back and reread that you wanted to shoot the 308.. If that is the case then I would go with the 140s too. My only issue with the 7mm08 is that they don't make enough in between rounds in the 110-130 grain weight.. The round is designed to be between the 243 and 308.. But with mostly 140 grain options it is alot closer to the 308.. I'd like it to be in the middle.. :D You can handload some pretty wicked rounds for the 7-08 though.

cwink... I don't have a handloader so I'll just have to stick to the old store bought stuff... I'll prob try to stick with some Federal Premium or Hornady ... I'll definately stay around the 140 grain weight though.

That fella hasn't contacted me yet bout that stand.

Hornady makes a good 139grainer.. My buddy said he was going to call, so I hope he does.
