Flotation foam

I know that you are supposed to use closed cell foam for floatation, but if you have priced any of the spray versions, you will see that it's pretty costly. Question is, do you think that the insulation board used in construction would be ok to use in marine use? From what I've seen on the internet, it is closed cell foam.....
