Re: 3,000 ducks already
one problem around this area is that many of the duck holes are dry. the central delta has had very little rainfall since June. i would think one would have to look back at 1980 to find a summer so hot and dry. it would cost a fortune to pump a duck hole full now. there are only a few holes suitable to move the ducks to now. the ducks need to be fed at their new location for at least 4 weeks before the food is removed 10 days prior to hunting. around 40 days prior to hunting is minimal. 45 to 50 days would be better. October 6 would be 50 days prior to thanksgiving. i do not believe the delta will see a good rain by then. it will take 2 inches just to wet the ground. additional rainfall will be run off. once the days shorten and the temperature drops, the ground will not dry very much. we need good rain by the middle of October to move the ducks for thanksgiving hunts.

not this year. however, if things go well and the hunters who lease the holes are happy and there seems to be a market for these ducks, then yes, we will raise mallard ducks and sell them to the public.

the pen will be built tomorrow morning. the ducks will be fed for 5 days in the pen before moving them. we will move 400 ducks at a time to at least two locations next week

Re: 3,000 ducks already
the pen was all but completed today with the help of the ultimate guru. the guru thinks that they may possibly be able to move 400 ducks tomorrow. they are going to give it a try. the ducks normally are fed in the pen several days prior to moving. however, the ducks appear very hungry and were not fed today in hopes that tomorrow they will enter the pen and be moved. the ducks absolutely do not fit the federal officers description of a tame duck. not one single duck ever approached the feeding sight while the pen was being built. the description the federal officer gave my neighbor was that of a duck, once frightened away by a loud noise, would swim back to the feeding sight unafraid of people. the ducks stayed out of shooting range and never approached the area. the guru also said that it is not necessary, although preferred, to transport the ducks 4 weeks prior to the 10 day food cut off for hunting. he said that he thought 5 to 7 days was acceptable. so the minimum appears to be 5 days with feed plus 10 days without feed. that brings the minimum down from 40 days to 15 days. with the absence of water thus far, this is good news. November 10th is 15 days prior to Thanksgiving Day. maybe we will get some good rains by then.

Re: 3,000 ducks already
the pen was completed today. 201 ducks were moved to another break. 15 mallards to a crate. once the ducks were taken to the new break, the crates were placed within 4 feet of the water. feed was spread by the shovel full over the tops of the crates and the whistle was blown repeatedly. after only 10 or 15 minutes the ducks were released one crate at a time. one dog trap was set and a dozen Nite Guard Lites placed in various places and levels around the feeding area. the ducks were left with plenty of food and will be left with excess food for several days. once the mallards are fully acclimated to the new location, new food will not be added until all the available food is eaten. the whistle will continue to be used at the new location even on the days when no extra food is added. once the food is completely eaten, feeding will resume as usual. only one feeding location is necessary now. the ducks will maneuver throughout the break now. an additional 200 ducks are to be moved to this same break Monday

Re: 3,000 ducks already
the ducks are now over 17 weeks old. they avoid predators easily. no dead ducks have been found in weeks. the ducks are considered full grown at 20 to 22 weeks. one sack of feed per day is all that is necessary to feed 200 ducks. i cannot remember the price of one sack of feed but i will find out and post the figure. as i have watched this thing unfold it has been quite a lot of work up to this point. however, watching these 200 ducks being released in a new break and hearing what little has to be done from here on out with these 200 mallards, buying mallards at this age and placing them in breaks is going to require very little work. of course, mallards at this age cost much more than the original $4.50 per duck at 4 weeks old. generally speaking, the vast majority of duck sales are divided into three groups. ducklings only a few days old, 4 to 6 week mallards and full grown mallards 20 to 22 weeks old. one would basically avoid all the work buying full grown mallards but pay the most money. full grown mallards would only require a week or less of food. the food would be required only to acclimate the duck to the break. the ducks can be scheduled to be delivered at the time and place of the customers choosing. therefore, the ducks could be scheduled to arrive 15 to 17 days prior to hunting and would require the least amount of feeding by the customer (5 to 7 days feeding and 10 days "no food law"). all the cost in the ducks are in labor and food. food consumption and the labor involved are the two driving factors when pricing a mallard.
