Cold Weather layering

Postby levi127 » Mon Sep 20, 2010 3:45 pm

Well im sure this goes around every single year. I just wanted to see how everyone layers in the cold weather in the blinds or pits.
Their are so many options now days with fleece and everything else. Then you have Drake, Duck Commander, Under Armour and Red head and many more companies.

What all does everyone go with mainly is the question. Use as a base layer and outter wear.

Anyone used any of this Under Amour Ayton Fleece? What the buck commanders use. I tried it at Bass pro this weekend and that stuff was heavy and thick.

Pants - bluejeans. If it is really cold, a pair or whatever fleece I can find.
Top - long sleeve shirt, fleece pullover over shirt, Drake EQ pullover and a Browning jacket over that if it is really freaking cold.

Then slap on the waders. Between that and me being kind of a fat kid, I stay warm unless my waders leak.

I usually just have a layer or long johns on, then jeans. If it is really cold I will add some fleece pants before putting on my insulated bibs or waders. I have never been cold in a duck blind because you can move around. If I get cold its in a deer blind where I am trying to sit still. If all else fails I bring da heater..

You can never go wrong with a little extra weight added on during season.
Never leave home without the little heater! Learned that the hard way when waders had a leak. I like to never warmed up.

Pants- UA coldgear tights (yes they tight as Hell) and carhartt pants or fleece pants if really cold.
Top- UA coldgear shirt, drake MST then drake jac shirt if really cold. I love the jac shirt!
Then waders

Anyone use the XPS I think its called by red head?

+1 here except dont forget the mosquito dope! When I hunt the Delta I usually wear fleece pants, blue jeans, t shirt, Saint's sweatshirt, waders and my big ol coat. And I wear a fleece full face mask. Another question if I may hijack a little. Do yall wear 3.5mm or 5mm waders? I have 3.5s because I do hunt down here and never have been cold in em in the Delta, but was thinking to stepping up to 5s because of the durability factor. I am just worried they will be too hot even up north. I usually break ice and a sweat at the same time now.

I had the 5mm last year and used them 1 time. To heavy, to hard to really move much in and to dang hot. I went back with the macks pw 3.5 waders and never had a problem out of them.
If you sit still and dont move much or just get up and down to shot, then 5mm would be good. Only on a freezing day.

If its around 28-35, I've got these loose slob pants which are just thin cotton I wear around everywhere and simply tuck the cuffs in my BPS "forever" socks & put on my waders. Got several old pair of Remington branded thermal underwear and use one the shirts for an underlayer then a drake quarter zip and if its at the lower end of the temp range, a drake jacket over that.

If its below 28, I'll just layer more of the Remington thermal underwear as appropriate. Go with some sort of insulated face mask at that point.

When it got down to 10-13 or so last year I had on 3 layers of thermal underwear, another pair of socks, and a polar fleece facemask. Didn't get chilled in the slightest.

I bought some UA Derecho pants and a jacket last year and thats the best money i've spent. Went to Missouri deer hunting and it was cold the first couple of days and the wind was blowing hard. All I had on was UA coldgear tights (shirt and pants) and the Derecho jacket and pants and I never once got cold. It was amazing how good that stuff works and its wind proof.

I've been wanting to get some of the UA camo but I can't make myself fork out that kinda $$$ for a jacket and pants.

they had it on sale at Bass Pro a few weeks back for half of what I paid for it. Its very durable and I should be able to get 5-7 years out of it like most of my camo gear. I promise it's worth the money you will spend.

50% off normal price. Still high, but $200 for the set is better than $200 for each piece :)

When I was younger below 50

themal undies and a flannel shirt and jeans

Now

Wool, Fleece, quad parka, windproof pants, silk unders cause I like to feel sexy, heater, windblock
and complaining when the wind is over 10mph

See what you young Men have to look forward too.

Oh
and another heater incase it gets below 40
