You got that part right already! I would also look into Duck Commander calls. Great selection and very reasonable. Phil Robertson may be insane, but his calls sound like a duck.webfeet7 wrote:Im not really wanting to learn to call so that i can constantly blow at every duck that passes. The main reason i want to learn is just to pretty much say that i can do it..and just in case a day ever comes up that i need to call. Trust me i know that most of the ducks around here are more afraid of a call than attracted to it. Just wanting to become a more well rounded duck hunter.
Re: Learning to call
DR-85 and ANY reputable whistle...should be able to find BOTH for around $30. Start with a simple Quack(dr-85), or, peep(whistle) and build from there. Save all the High Ballin' and chuckling for later. Head down to your local park with a bag of popcorn and mimic what ya hear. Some areas I hunt...you break out with hail call or high ball...the dux are outta there. I believe the whistle to be under appreciated by ALOTTA folks, but, them cheapo thingys will turn a call shy duck. Cadence, tone, and volume will all come with experience...EASY on the spit... Have fun with it brotha....good luck

soft all wood double read is the best thing to learn on, and will keep you from "blowing ducks outta there". I would recommend the el cheapo duck commander all wood call.
To the guys that think you can't call hard to ducks. You really should hunt dry fields in Canada one day. Yes you could shoot a limit there without calling, but you can also flat turn a duck from as far as he can hear you. they want to be called to, from the horizon to the ground. We were hunting one day. Split up maybe 200 yds apart. Couple guys in a dry field on a nole, couple in a lowspot in a pothole. Ducks would be coming for the pothole, locked up, then two of us would start high balling in the field to keep them off the water. Probably turned 95% of the ducks and got them into the field. The most fun hunting I've had in a long time. One of the guys ran up from the pothole, and said please quit calling our ducks off we don't have any calls. As soon as he went back down, bam turned it up as loud as I could blow. I honestly had more fun doing that than shooting birds.

Re: Learning to call
Sorry for the repost- Dr B beat me to it.
Also another good cd to try is "The Fundamentals of Duck Call Operation" by Keith Allen- The Refugeman. It could be the best $15 you will ever spend.
It really helped me to break 35 years of bad habits. Good luck

THAT's the ONE!! I just couldn't remeber the name of the CD. Keith Allen rocks on a call, man. I need to get another one. I've gone through 2 of them. They get scratched up and so forth banging around in the truck.

not so fast my friend... imo... each day presents its own challanges and your just never sure how the ducks will respond... by far two of the most important aspects of duck calling would be as someone said earlier knowing what to say and when to say it... and then being able to read the birds and see if their being receptive to whats being said..
the age ol advice is to call less later in the season.. true- swort of ... sometimes.. not all the time.. based on numerous conditions.. you may find that you have to get on the call and stay on the call to make the ducks finish.. the only way you'll know this is by being able to read the birds...
how you sound on the call is not necessarly the most important factor...
if all the above prove to be to much bullschit.. just blow your call when the good callers are calling and you'll realize how much better you sound when their calling...

Just hunt where the ducks want to be and you really don't have to be very good. The sign of a really good caller is making the ducks do things they don't really want to do. Wish I fit into that category.

Re: Learning to call
I think the biggest mistake new callers make is not recognizing there is a difference between calling ducks to hunt and calling judges in a competition. They see these guys let out a 20-30 note intense highball and think they have to sound just like it. I say note because it's nothing more than a musical instrument, especially when in competition. I doesn't take a whole lot to learn to call ducks to hunt. As has been said, the most important thing to learn is when to call and when not to call and what sound to make when. Everybody gets hung up on blowing the call and not learning these important things.
Just my 2 cents on it.
