i don't think there are that many snake lovers in the world. its not like bambi. these are snakes. and yeah most of them are good. but then again most spiders probably won't hurt you but i kill all of them too. those are 2 things i can't handle. sorry. and i'm not sure why i developed this phobia. i used to run through the woods all day long when i was a kid and never thought twice about it.

When my mom taught kindergarden, my dad used to take our desert king snake up there for show and tell. ALL the kids would always want to hold it, and it was usually a girl who came up first. They hadn't been taught to fear snakes yet. My dad taught me and my brother not to be afraid of snakes and we aren't. I was at Double R 2's house Thursday night and his youngest son was walking around with his pet king snake balled up in his hand. He was taught not to be afraid of snakes either. It's all in your upbringing.

yep. i grew up around fishponds as a toddler and the overwhelming majority of snakes were moccasins, so my grandparents taught me to steer clear of them by instilling fear of them....i was the kid that wandered off and the parents would always found me in precarious predicaments - always found me up on the tractors (while still in diapers) and even knee deep (waist deep for me at the time) out in the middle of the newly built fishponds as they were filling with water (in diapers again)....so, i guess they figured either make me fear them or i'd most likely end up bit by one.

even though i know they are a valuable part of the life cycle (rats, mice, etc), i still get a flash of terror when i first see one - i don't use my flight response like i used to, but the urge is there!

i could be wrong, but i believe he is speaking of the second coming in these verses, until then i don't see any lions laying down with the lambs, but i do look forward to that day

no offense taken but i disagree. we don't live in the country and my dad has never done any hunting or fishing with me of any sort. we don't have snakes and don't recall either of them ever mentioning snakes, positively or negatively. mostly i think its just a fear of something that can be potentially lethal and very hard to spot due to being camoflauged. for example, i know i hunt alligator infested swamps but have only a minimal amount of fear of alligators due to the fact that A) they are big usually easier to spot than a snake and i feel like i can avoid them and 2) they aren't venomous. not sure what the rational is behind this but that's my opinion.

And I've read way more folks die from insect bites than from venomous snakes.

now folks that know me, know i will go outta my way to let most any snake live, UNLESS THEY SCARE/SUPRISE ME!! then it better be really clear that its a non venimous one or it gets it regardless

I have a Very lovely king snake that stays in my barn, and i went to great pains not long ago to free him from a couple of rat traps that he had managed to get himself into.

my scripture verse post was simply the largest reason people kill snakes, whether they think of the verse or not,

God put that fear or instinct or whatever you want to call it into us. and unless you were raised to NOT fear them then you fear them.

DR2, most folks bit by snakes are messing with them too, however when i was buying timber for a living, my danner snake boots were hit 4 times by snakes that i never saw till after the strike!!

bingo. i never really was ever just "freaked out"/scared $#!+ over the suckers..... until, showing a track of timber to a logger, and you guessed it... stepped right straddle of a 5 and half foot rattle snake. to this day i still get all worked up when i see a snake or have a close encounter. just knowing that if that dang rattle snake would've bit me, i woulda been dead.... that just did me in on the whole snake deal.

needless to say that big rattler caught the other end of a small stick of hardwood pulp wood. I seriously couldn't sleep for days after i had my come to jesus meeting

this makes more sense than anything. it's not that people have been taught to fear them, its more that they (including myself) aren't well educated on snakes and don't really intend on getting close enough to find out. i'll be honest, snakes are very intriuging(sp) and we used to play with green snakes all the time but when i'm by myself in the woods, unless i know for a fact that it isn't going to interfere with my hunt or it isn't poisonous, it will be disposed of. however, unlike these guys i wouldn't go out looking for them, i do my best to avoid them like the plague.

I wish I had a dollar for every blue line I saw slithering through the woods when I used to go to work with my dad. You wouldn't believe how many rattle snakes timber markers get when they mark the base of a tree.
