If you have a spot requiring a mile walk, through the woods, not on a nice trail, then 5 am is not early enough. I would prefer 4, or even 3. I would even like a rule that says you can't leave the parking area or launch between 4 am and 8 am. If you cant get away from Mr. Nasty by 3:30, then you ought not hunt

I think it is a good idea to have some rule concerning leaving time. I dont care how early the time is, just that there is a starting point. Getting to the spot at 9pm just aint right. It don't promote responsible drinking.

By the way, I haven't tried Nasty. Anyone got a report. I guess my group has slowed down considerable. We have also discovered that the fights at the camp are much friendlier and there is not much trouble you can get into by staying at the camp.

I like all the don miller rules, cept he kinda went overboard there at the end. 15 shells wouldn't be bad.

I add a new rule: everyone MUST enter the property from designated locations.

There will be folks there at 3 am to make sure that they are first to launch and when 5 am comes everyone will be in such a hurry that more accidents will be likely to occur.

Well said!!!

Absolutely!!!

KRT, that was suppose to be taken as a joke. The main problem with the WMAs is that we are already being over regulated. I certainly did not expect anyone to take my post seriously. Would you be will to give up your plastic reed call for a metal reed call? Doesn't make sense, does it? :?

'Couple o' years ago, we kept gettin' just ahead of this one guy. No matter what he did, we managed to barely outwit him. ('Barely' is good enough, though). 'Got to be a friendly game of cat and mouse.

We knew it would only be a matter of time before he camped-out. It was opening day of the second split and the earliest we'd ever seen anybody at the ramp was 5:00. So we figured this guy would be sittin' in his boat 15 minutes before that......waiting on us. :D

Well......we pulled off the road about a mile from the landing, un-did the straps, had all the gear in the boat, and proceeded to the ramp in stealth mode. Then 1/4-mile from the ramp I floored-it. :P

Poor fella had his boat in the water....everything was ready to go......but he made the mistake of bringin' his girlfreind and a bottle of bourbon along to keep him warm. Fortunately for us, it was in the upper 20's that night.

Well, the combination of Old Charter, a warm woman and a heated vehicle with reclining seats proved to be his downfall......'cause when we blasted in there at 2:30 for the 'surprise attack', it caught the poor guy SO off-guard, he knew there wasn't anything he could do. The windows were so fogged-up, we weren't sure how many folks were in there at first. (We figured 2.......and ruled-out the possibility of it being the waterfowler and an overly-anxious retriever that can't tell time). The engine was runnin' but there was no sign of movement......of any kind. We were a little concerned, but proceeded with our assault on the boat ramp.

I think we were down the ramp and in the water before they realized they had company. I fired-up the outboard while Anne parked the truck and we shoved-off about the time their dome light finally shattered the darkness. We were 50yds out before somebody finally stumbled out of the vehicle, mumblin' things we were better-off imagining, over the chug of our outboard.

'Bout 15 minutes after we were set-up in the hole, waiting for sunrise..... here he comes. I let him come all the way up a 400yd-long stump field. Imagine the anticipation he must've felt......the closer he got, thinking we MIGHT have gone somewhere else......and that it's lookin' like he's got this hole all to himself.......just 25yds more and about 13 more snags, and he'll know for sure whether he'll have the place to himself after-all, or NOT!!!....('nuttin' like the cold blast of a Q-beam across the bow to completely demoralize a fella that's gone a disoriented 400yds in roughly 45 minutes with a 20-degree chill, a hangover and no breakfast). :x

What made it so bad on the poor guy, was that he had marked a trail thru the stump field with Bud-Light cans in trees. Funny......somebody found'em the day before (on my scouting run) and moved'em over, 'bout 10 feet.  (Heck....I better shut-up, or folks'll start using my own tactics in retribution against me.) :?

He took it perty-good, though......but yelled, "YA"LL ENJOY THIS ONE.........I'LL GIT YO SORRY @$$ NEXT TIME". (hehehehe) See how much fun, hunting on public land can be? It's what you make it.

Damn good arguments gentlemen ! Anatidae, helluva story. You would fit in well with Blue Room Boy and myself. Nothin' better than a good ole' pissin' match about 4:15 in the morning, with a Nor'Easter bearin' down on ya'. It ain't nothin' for BRB to whoop a man's ass before a duck slayin', because he does this every day. Don, don't know nothin' about the fight at the Scatters boat ramp. Maybe JimAire can shed some light on this. I would vote FOR the 5:00 AM rule, just so I could sit at the boat ramp and enjoy the spectacle.

I think it would suck. The only good thing would be that
I'd have to get the yz250 I've always wanted to win the "race."

It wouldn't work to well. I can see people getting dropped off at 3am and the rest sitting in the truck 'til 5. People would figure a way around the rule.

I'll 2nd Meeka on not having enough time to get to some places that require death marches.

Nothing like a two or three mile stroll in the early morning to get the ole duck juices flowing. Come go on the widow maker walk with us Schlater. :D

I once lost my mojo on a death march with Tater Red on one of JimAire's frozen-over gumbo fields in BoogerDen ---almost passed out at least twice on the way out --- had to ditch the decoys and use the ol Mossberg as an ice-breaking wading staff --- as my life was flashing before my eyes, I was hoping that it would not end on such a crappy hunt---heck, Lord, at least let me go out with a full game strap. After praying for either a second chance or quick death, and promising never to return to the killing field if I could just make it out, the holy spirit overcame me with a fourth wind and I slowly drug myself out of the sticky frozen Delta gumbo tundra. I remember saying, just before a serious sinking spell hit me: Take me to the duck camp!!! I woke up a few hours later in my bunk at the camp to the smell of one of BRB's deer chili farts. I have been in a twelve step recovery plan ever since. No more fields. No more fields. No more fields. Give me the timber.

Since I enjoy sleeping in my waders and getting up just after midnight to head out to the hunting area, lets just do away with the 5:00 am rule and let it be a true free for all. Heck, for that matter, we could go straight from the Blue Room to the duck hole. Just think of all the time we would have before shooting time. We could set out about 500 decoys in a radius so large no one could set up within 100 yards of us without being in our decoys. After setting the decoys, we could have a nightcap to take the edge off, take a power nap, sober up, cook and eat a four course breakfast, and still have time to brew coffee and take a good dump well before the morning frost had time to set up. Our hunting party could spread out to take up every hole in a square mile of the hole we inend to hunt to make sure we have plenty of space come shooting time. Hey, the more I think about it, the better it sounds. Bring it on.
You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning.
