Find every artical that you can to read and watch every DVD that you can and start maken friends with every guy that has got a retriever in your area and train with them every chance you can and prepare for your patience to be tested to its fullest and have go have at it.

Re: training a pup
If I was starting over again I would first read 10 minute retriever 2nd join a retriever club 3rd read Finished Dog by Charles Jurney and always remember to have fun. When you start to push your dog the fun goes out the window and you will mess up big time.

I agree get your hands on anything you can book wise and dvd wise. Evan Graham and Lardy both have good things to help you through the training process. Find a system and stick with it. Yes, you will tweak it here and there to make it suitable for you. Just found a process and go with it from day 1. Biggest advice I can give that I can is to find a training group. Find some guys that have been doing it a while and they will be a lot of help. From where do I go from this step to my doing is doing this how do I fix it, they will be a very helpful.

South Ms club is having a basics seminar Sat the 14th. Might be a good place to begin. It's free and lunch is provided.
Re: training a pup
i trained my first dog going straight down the chapters in Tritronics Retriever Training by Jim Dobbs and its was easy. I didnt actually put a collar on him until 22 months. And i joined a training club and frequented the training days.
I did a lot wrong, but he still turned out fine, good enough to get invited back to several hunts where people asked me to bring my dog back too. But also i wouldn't have gotten a chocolate

Re: training a pup
Like stated before, get a hold of as much information as possible and join a training club. Be patient and good luck.

Woody. As soon as it gets cooler a lot of folks will start training in this area. Cant do too much in this heat right now. Maybe one setup late in the evening. Shoot me a pm with your contact info. I know a guy from Brandon who has a dog about your pups age. I will put you in touch with him. Should be going out this afternoon to train around 7 if you want to go. Bug.
