Grass Help
I have a real shady yard with several pinoaks. What grass can I plant that will grow in the shade?

As far as I know, St. Augustine is the most shade tolerant. Someone else may have a better suggestion.

there's some kinda zoysia that's supposed to do well in shade, can't remember the cultivar. How bout making a bed and quit fighting a loosing battle

Good idea. Somebody once told me that a guy asked him how to get grass to grow in his yard with lots of trees. He looked at the guy and said, "Cut the trees down."

Zoysia, if it were me I would go with Meyers or empire zoysia
Life is to short to only fish on weekends

Meyers is not a shade tolerant cultivar of zoysia.
Empire is somewhat better but still a poor to avg choice for shady areas.
Emerald zoysia is good for shade.
Palasades zoysia is the best readily available choice of zoysia for the shade.
Certain cultivars of st aug are great as well.
Fescue is an option as well.

wish i would have known that before i put down st aug in a very shady area of my back yard.
looks just like shat after a couple of months while the not so shaded end looks good.

We're doing a shade study with it now at the course and have been for a couple years and its suprising how it handles. We are the worlds onlr research and demo course and do research on several grass types, fertilizer, and equipment. Check us out at www.farmlinks.org

If myers or emerald are considered the most shade tolerant strains....it's news to me and a lot of other people much smarter than me.
