Nat Geo Channel - MS River

Postby MudHog » Sat Jul 03, 2010 6:26 pm

Watching a documentary of 3 guys who are traveling the entire ms river. They started in canoes in the headwaters and are now in a pontoon cabin boat trying to get to Memphis. Water is high, current is strong from previous rain and wind is blowing against the current, not a single one has had a life jacket on since I've started watching. Stupid, pure stupid.

we're watching it, too. i was telling my wife about the hippies that were floating down on a raft (and had to lay over in v'burg or natchez, until they got an approved steering device??? or something so they could avoid the barges) and the guys in the show caught up with them and camped overnight with them...between minniapolis and st. louis.

I saw that part too. They only wore life jackets when they were on other peoples boats.

At the end, that one dumbarse caught a monster of a drum. The guide was yelling at him "set the hook! set the hook!"

pretty decent show though to be a bunch of tree huggers putting it together.

I watched for about 15 minutes hoping to see something interesting. All I saw during that time was an idiot trying to stand on top of floating objects in the MS River. Not sure what the point of this was, but it went on for the entire time that I watched. That was all of that stupidity I could take. I turned the channel and moved onto something else --- an interesting documentary of the story of this country's independence.

The BS that masquerades as entertainment these days on tv has me puzzled. Yes, perhaps the idiot trying to stand on floating debris in the MS River is more entertaining than the QVC and other shopping channels, the va-ja-ja networks, the other mind numbing, over-dramatic "reality" shows, and the host of other airwave crap. But, in the end, its still idiotic BS.

But, at least the lack of anything good and interesting to watch has some good side effects --- I am watching less and less tv as time goes by.

I spend a lot of time on the river never have seen a need for a life jacket. Cold water sure but most of the time don't see the need. I have a friend who has kayaked from the headwaters to the gulf. I have it on my list of thing to do before I die.

Then you can risk not being with your family if you decide not to wear a life jacket on any body of water, it still a stupid idea.

I've been thinking about sending nat geo an email about that show. The pro angler said it perfect about the guy jumping on everything, he doesn't respect the river near enough.

On the Ms River, the life lacket''s not so much to save your life, but to keep you floating till they find your body so your family has something to bury.
The guy trying to stand on the debris is just plain stupid. I'm sure he would classify himself as "extreme". Just what this world needs, more "extreme naturalists".
They could have made that show really interesting and informative if they had been a little more respectful of the power of the river, and focused more on the history and importance of it.

i have to agree on it being disappointing...basically it was a few "yanks" boating down the big muddy in a pontoon/house boat. it was very evident that they had no business doing it, in the first place.....from the fog "just stay in the center of the channel" (along with the barges that run the river in the fog....in the channel), to taking the tug boat wake to the side instead of head on (should'a capsized with that one, but they got extremely lucky), to asking the tug captain if he wants them to come along side of his moving tug on "his right side" and promptly pulling up on his left....to taking the entire length of the river down with no lifejackets on.....even the pro angler...on a fairly small pontoon..... in one of, if not THE, most turbulant rivers in the country.....during a time of flood waters laden with debris.

Sorry to hear about your friend. But I have spent a lot of time swimming in the river and it's backwater. I'm not saying it doesn't deserve respect but it is not the death trap people who know nothing about it make it out to be. It has strong current in places and calm water in places it takes common sense and an ability to swim to enjoy it without fear. I enjoy the river and I think a lot of people miss out by not spending time on the river out of fear.
