Coyote Roundup

Our landowner approached us with a desire to thin out the yotes on his place.
I am looking for experienced opinions, proven techniques, tools of the trade and possibly yote killers to partake.
Terrain is approx 1000 acres in the MS Delta & mostly open fields. The yotes are seen on a regular basis @ several locations on the place.

Coyote hunting is tied for my second favorite type of hunting with turkeys (duck being #1). I have hunted them in Canada and down here too. Delta hunting is tough though. There isn't a high concentration of them and they are more "here today gone tomorrow" in the delta, which makes it tough. The more woods you have, the less likely they roam. I've had great success with using mouth calls. I usually incorporate howeling and distress calls on each set. I use my .223 and .204 in open areas with long shots. Blasted a few with shotguns hunting them like turkeys in the woods with T buckshot. Same as anything else, early morning and evening being the best time. Not a big fan of summer hunting due to pups being too young to survive on their own if I kill a female, as the pups will die of starvation. Late August thru early October is by far the easiest time to kill them in good #'s. They are dumbest since not being messed with by hunters and the pups are full grown and really dumb.

Got a 22-250, Fox-pro & mouth calls, as well as colored lenses and spotlight for night time (think you have to get a depradation permit and be designated the landowner's agent for night hunting - or that used to be the case).

You've actually got a chance to do some good with rifles out in the open like that, as opposed to the dense woods of central Mississippi.

Also got some leg traps, which really and truly would be the most effective means of sizing down the population.

[edited to include the following:] They are going to want to travel along any low or covered spots there are to get to the prey, meaning most likely irrigation ditches. Also, you need to set up down wind as they'll want to circle to wind you.

Why not just put out a bunch of anti-freeze then. It's the same thing. You will just kill a bunch of animals you weren't wanting to kill, in a horrible way.

As I said before, coyote hunting is my second favorite type of hunting, but predator control is a fantasy. You have to kill at least 75% of their population EVERY year without fail or they will be back to their previous population the following year. And anyone who has ever really tried to kill 75% of the predators on a property knows it's a full time job. Trapping and hunting relentlessly. A profession at MSU did a very interesting study on that. QDMA also found, that the more coyotes killed on a property, the more deer are killed by coyotes. They are a very interesting animal. They only produce the amount of pups that can be sustained in an ecosystem. Therefore, the more coyotes killed, the larger the litter of pups. Pretty interesting.
