What kind of reed is it?

I hit the jackpot this afternoon. I tracked down Mr. Son Jordan. I knocked on the door and said that i was looking for Mr.Son the duck call maker. His wife grinned from ear to ear and said " you are in the right place"! He showed me his display case with all the different woods and colored acrylics. We went out to the shop and commenced to have a "history lesson". He had an some old pictures in his shop dated Jan1958 with 5 or 6 hunters lined up over a multiple wads of ducks taken from the scatters.
He said that someone called him from Birmingham, Ala. today (damn OOS's  ) who had just read an article about him and others in Greenwood who use to compete in calling comps. They wanted to buy one of his call. Wonder if it was someone on this site- fess up. I only got to stay about 30 min. with him but told him I was coming back in a few days with my son and we were gonna spend most of the day with him to get the full history lesson. He couldn't refuse cause i didn't have change for $100 and i did need to return and gather my change! :D
He said he still uses the original pattern that he started with in the 50's. He has some stories to tell. If you want one of these classics-stop in and see him. He said " Im here everyday- ain't going anywhere".
He has many different woods to choose from barrels or inserts. He pulled out a white poplar that came from a tree that fell down in his front yard- pretty call.
I bought the maple barrel with cherry insert.

It wasn't me! But I did talk to his nephew who lives in the Bham area. I wanted the family to know about the great stories folks were sharing on this thread. He and the other great call makers should know how much the sport appreciates them.

Please post up a picture of the call when you get it. And if you have the means (and Mr. Jordan's permission), record the stories. It would be so cool to hear them.
Never assume.

Glad to hear that Mr. Son is alive and well. 8) I haven't seen him in over a year. I need to stop by and visit. I didn't know that he was even fooling with acrylic call making. Would have figured he'd consider that an abomination. Mr. Son is an interesting fellow and will talk duck hunting and call making as long as you'll listen. He is the last of all of the old call makers. No telling how many calls he has turned.

This has been without a doubt the best post Ive ever read on here.

The history of this area has always intrigued me but there is so little of it on paper. Or maybe I just cant find it.

Swag, give me a call. I need to talk to you when you get a chance.

Better yet, sometime between now and dove season, I plan to have another get together and cooking at the Wooly Swamp. I'll go by and pick him up and let him come chew the fat with the ducksouth crew. I promise, he'd love it and prolly end up selling some calls.

I will see what i can do on the recording. Mr Son runs a squirrel cage fan in his shop and it gets kinda loud. Teul2 and i will be going by to visit him this friday afternoon.
Funny note though- i was out in his driveway trying out different calls and i started some feed call. He yelled out the door "You don't need to do any of that stuff- whens the last time you had ducks landing in your decoys doin that mess". I said I understand and i will refrain from doing feed calls in your presence.

He will also tell you to put your upper lip over the top of the call...not like you are trying to take a swig out of a coke bottle. I always thought that was kind of odd but he says he designed the call with a bigger front end to be blown that way. Any time I blow one of his call around him, I try to remember to blow it like he thinks it should be blown.

Thats funny-that is EXACTLY what he told me and then he showed me. I commented on the barrel shape and opening size and he said it is an exact replica of a coca cola bottle- outside, inside diameter and edge. :D

Bill, as I posted earlier in this thread. I spent a bunch of time back in the late 80's with him in his shop practicing calling comp routines. I didn't place but blew his call in the very first duck calling contest I ever entered...the Heart of Dixie Regional in Birmingham in 1989.

I'm no guru- call me. I can pick it up early tomorrow before work and have it scanned before lunch.
