chasing cripples

Postby Trappey » Thu May 20, 2010 2:05 pm

Never hunted with a dog before but have one that will hunt this coming winter. I hear of peoples dogs chasing cripples, i'm sure its just something they will automatically do being that what they are sent after is running from them or is there techniques to this

That is the most fun the dogs typically have is chasing cripples. It takes some time for them to learn the ins and outs of it, but they get it together quickly. If you hunt deep water it can be a little slower to get started. I have found Poul d'eau to be the best for this. Cripple one on purpose they dive but not for very long. THey are a good way for a young dog to learn what ducks do when they dive.

seems like a really fun part to watch. is there anything you can do for dogs if they aren't crashing through the water to the dead bird

Get some live ducks and introduce by shackling one. You would be surprised by the number of dogs that will blink a cripple if not introduced properly. If your dog isnt hitting the water for a dead bird, after you let him get excited about chasing a shackled bird, shoot it as a flyer over water.
