Thanks to friends in high places, I got started planting some partridge pea, big and little bluestem, Indian grass and switchgrass today.

I am expecting a covey every 40 acres almost immediately so I now need a friend with a bird dog.

Any takers?

I don't know what you have as far as property size and layout but if you have some fields you can manipulate every year plant some ragweed in them. Yes, I said ragweed. It makes great overhead cover for chicks and their mommas when they're little so they can get lots of grasshoppers and other bugs while being safe from predators. Plow it under in the fall (late October) if you want to so the birds will stay out of it during hunting season and then plow it again at the end of March - end of April to make the ragweed come back. It gets dusty late in the summer when the ragweed is seeding out or whenever it gets dry so if you're allergic to the stuff you might have a tough time with it. And yes, I know it sounds crazy to plant ragweed, but it works.

Who planted it for you Wingman? Carried a drill to Yazoo NWR a couple of weeks ago. They were going to plant 26 acres on the refuge. Lots of new tree plantings on Yazoo as well. I did see a gobbler and two hens there while setting the drill.

I planted it with Delta Wildlife's drill. Got a lot more to do next year after I get this Bermuda under control on the levees.

Heard my first quail on the farm about 2 weeks ago at sunrise. I was stoked!

Finished planting all of my nwsg's today. Now to sit back and wait for the quail to knock on my door.
