Alright I am at a loss as to what to do now, I changed the spark plugs and it didn't help. Adjusting the carb screw in and out didn't do anything for the motor.
I suspect there is something more serious going on since I tried to work on the carbs maybe a burned piston or something else.
I have noticed that there seemed to be more oil in the tub of water that I had the motor in. Also sometimes when I try to pull start it it seems to be harder to pull some times than others.
so unless someone has a good idea of what it may be I think that I might just have to take it to a mechanic and spend the money. I hate to do it because I like to try to do things myself but I don't know anything else to do.
thanks for all the help
boat motor question
Re: boat motor question
Man - keep me posted. I've got a Yamaha Breeze ATV that I have been working on and am having some of the same issues. Starts fine, but can only run on full or half choke. When I shut the choke down after warm-up, it dies. Have tried adusting the idle screw and the screw on the bottom of the carb that adjusts the fuel/air.
Son, be sure to check the oil. The gas will take care of itself. George Carter - Circa 1965

I ending up pulling the carb off a final time and figured out that I had not installed the float correctly when I put the carb back together. I runs like a new motor now. Mine only had 1 screw so it was a little easier to adjust.
Re: boat motor question
I'll check the float on mine as well - possible that I didn't get it set correctly when I broke it down to clean. Glad you reminded me of that! I'll keep you posted on my progress. Thanks!

Re: boat motor question
Have given up and took my carb for a thorough cleaning. Tech in the Service Dept. said he's doing 100 carbs a month (!) now due to Ethanol problems. Said most problems are with rough idling or no idling and will only run with the choke either all the way out, or half-way.
Government mandated Ethanol...brilliant! Was forewarned by a specialist last week that if the government gets it's way and it goes to a 15% Ethanol blend...get ready as all of our ATV's, Weedeaters, Blowers, Chainsaws will all be in the service bays shortly thereafter.
Come to think of it, a horse would replace the need for the ATV and the Weedeater...hmmm...
