Youth Waterfowl Success?

Postby bluwtr » Mon Nov 26, 2001 11:36 am

Hey all,

Wondering if anyone took the young ones out this weekend? Took my son Sat and Sun a.m. First year for him to carry a gun. He shot several times. He put one down, but we couldn't find it, too warm for the dog. Had ALOT of birds working, just not alot commiting. On Sun. he got his first one--a redhead. He was extremley proud as was I. He had some passing shots that he missed or didn't shoot, but oh well, he had a ball. We again saw alot of birds, but they buzzed the spread. Also saw alot of birds hell bent for leather headin' to Ole' Mexico, but they were using oxygen masks they were so high.

Here comes the weather and the birds boys!!! Get ready!!!

Took my little brother on Sunday, we worked 2 groups of Mallards, one with about 40 ducks in it, but they wouldn't commit. Didn't see many birds at all. Got one suzie to sit on the water about 50 yards away. He shot but missed, we had fun anyway.

Guided at Noxubee for a kid and his father who wasn't a big duck hunter. Saw only Woodies, but he killed his 2 drakes! He was happy, but I think I was the thrilled one to be in the big trees callin' ducks.

We were at Noxubee also, our first time there. Very organized and a nice facility. Andy got a drake woodie, we saw a few teal and a couple of big ducks passing by. Great to see the dads out with the young 'uns. The youth hunts are a great idea. Good luck to everyone this weekend.

I took my 11 yr old and saw more birds than expected. We were able to get a few to decoy and commit--the last group was the payoff after missing the first couple of times.

He splashed a greenhead and finished him off on the water (which we officially refer to as the mow shot).

Saw some HUGE rafts way high on the move.

There were very few ducks, so we started shooting mosquitoes... they were as big as the ducks. Last year the youth hunt was allot more fun. End of the season, and tons of birds.
