Ear Health Question

Postby bulldog ducker » Sat Mar 06, 2010 9:38 pm

Been doing more work in swimming water than I usually do and Charile started shaking his head much more than usual. If you push on his he will yelp for a day or so after we train. They don't smell but are mildy red if you look down into them. I was wondering if there is anything that I can do to help clear the water out of his ears after we train. Any help will be appreciated.

I set up a two down shore with a blind in between after you guys left this am. Depends on the dog. I could tell Gale was not liking the cold water at all on the swim to the long bird (she was wanting to exit early but made it to the gunner so I didnt make an issue of it) so I didnt run the blind with her. Max on the other hand loved that cold water and wanted more. Wise man once said: Train the dog you got.

Still too early to do much water work, but if your gonna run your dog in a test or trial you gotta do what ya gotta do.

That's a recipe for souring a dogs attitude towards water work. Maybe we should wait for it to warm up a bit, then train in the water, and not rush to test??

It depends on where you live. I did a bunch of water work yesterday. You can do short up and out' marks all winter, it won't bother them a bit. I would wait on cheating singles and swim-by for a while. I try to get as many good fundamental marks as I can before the alligators get active.

Get some Malcetic-Otic from your vet, or google "purple stuff" but make it with witch hazel and not alcohol. It is as important to get it up in the wrinkes of the flap of the ear as down in the ear canal.

Have fun training your dog!

I am not going to put Gale back in it until it warms up a little more. I could tell she wanted to cheat and I don't want to get in a battle with her in cold water. With the projected temps this week, the water in farm ponds should be good to train in by this weekend in the afternoon.

bulldog,
like GC mentioned, i keep a small bottle of the "purple stuff (witch hazel) in the trainging bag. if we get into any questionable water or get any head shakes, out comes the purple stuff. And bout once a month I hit mine with it to keep em clean and preventative. hope that helps.

I use a 1/3 vinegar 2/3 alcohol solution on mine when they get out of the water. Just pour it in each ear twice and let them shake it out. This was actually recommended by my vet.
