MISS. DEER & TURKEY HUNTERS EXAMPLE FOR MISS. DUCK HUNTERS
MISS. DEER & TURKEY HUNTERS EXAMPLE FOR MISS. DUCK HUNTERS
As led by the Mississippi Chapter of the NWTF, Mississippi turkey hunters have lead the nation by VOLUNTARILY restricted themselves from shooting jakes...
As led by the MDWFP, Mississippi deer hunters lead the nation by adopting 4 point or better antler restrictions that have evolved into 10" and 12" spread and 12" and 15" beam length restrictions...
Note that these CONSERVATION actions are for species that are doing very well in terms of population history.
In the spirit of CONSERVATION, as opposed to self interest and money, it is time for Mississippi duck hunters to step up to lead the Nation in voluntarily restricting our season to 50/5 with 1 hen and NO SPINNERS- no matter what the Feds say or the other states do. Such an act of PUTTING THE RESOURCE FIRST would give us the moral high ground for attacking the AHM and spinners in other states as well as other pressing issues including Canadian and Mexican over harvest and - yes- habitat loss and predation.
The time for erring on the side of the resource is now. Mississippi duck hunters- like Mississippi deer and turkey hunters- should lead the way.

what about the kind that are wind operated? I mean I've got a 6 horse on mine now (waterproof box) and it literally sucks ducks in. It's AWESOME.

Interesting shared IP address. Just sayin.
You better tell the peeps what AHM is, if'n you want a discussion. Most of 'em don't read madduck.
Unless you are willing to protect the resource by giving up turkey season totally, you ain't really THAT interested in the resource.
Sorry, I gave at the office.

Your better put down the left handed cigarette and start doing some research. Jake are illegal and that is not voluntarily although it is a good idea not to shoot jakes. The deer resrictions were implimented by the MDWFP and not voluntarily. It is good for trophy deer but not widley liked.
As for as duck go there are folks out there that shoot only drakes. Most people do not even kill a limit of 6 ducks a day. Most are happy if they kill 4 per person a day. If i had to guess the the majority of hunters hunt about 25 or less days of the season. If you have a 50 day season mississippi would just arrange it so that you have another split during the week so you can hunt on the weekend.

Deer and turkeys aren't migratory. Ducks are. If Mississippi volunteers to do X or Y with regard to deer or turkeys, Mississippi pays the price and reaps the benefits. More specifically, if I don't shoot small bucks on my property, I personally am likely to enjoy bigger bucks next year. If Mississippi voluntarily restricts duck days or duck harvest, Mississippi pays the price and reaps no appreciable benefit because it's a big flyway and no one else is doing it. See Arkansas' voluntary decision to give up spinners and a hen. Didn't work out for them.
I'm all for voluntary restraint. I try not to kill hens. Mostly. And I'm all for Hammer or any of the rest of you voluntarily restricting yourselves to 50 days and 5 ducks. [I was involuntarily restricted to 5 ducks or less lots of days the last few years]. But I would rather not.

I wish they would ban any type of spinner. I bought two of them (for cheap at a yard sale I might add) used them once and they flaired more ducks than I've ever seen. I don't think we even killed a one man limit between 4 guys that day. But thats a story for another time. Jakes are a legal kill in AL but I wouldn't shoot one, same as the antler restrictions. Barbour county has a 3 point on one side restriction and sure they kill more nice deer these days but that might be the only deer you see after the mass genocide of does over the last 5 years. When I was younger me and my dad used to make that 4 hour drive about twice a year and in a weekend it was commonplace to see 25-50 sometimes even a hundred deer in the woods. I went down there in January and saw a spike in 4 days of hunting in prime conditions. You be the judge. I don't know about yall but I honestly like seeing deer. I guess I'm crazy.

The reason you're not seeing many deer down there anymore is because of hunting pressure, not killing too many does. The antler restrictions actually made it a more popular place because everybody thought that meant there would be bigger deer down there. Anyway, that's another discussion for another time and place.
Restricting duck season, unless based on scientific evidence, is just handicapping yourself for no reason. For migratory animals, doing one thing on one place won't bring any appreciable difference to the population as a whole. If you restricted the whole state it might make a small difference but that difference would not be worth sacrificing 10 days of the season and 1 bird per day. Comparing deer and turkey management to waterfowl management is, to use an overused phrase, like comparing apples and oranges. What you do for deer you would not do for ducks. That type of argument is weak and based on emotion, not facts. Again, just somebody looking for something to blame for a bad season instead of accepting it for what it is and moving on.
