I must disagree with you with both of your statements. Even with a hurricane this year in S. Louisiana that blew our birds out for the first part of the season we had as many or more ducks most of the season this year as compared to the last say four or five.

I'll bet you whatever you want to name if you would like to put a wager on it that if you drive north you will find ducks and in some places LOTS of ducks in Southern Illiniois, Missourri and the likes. Even when it freezes up big time up there some mallards and a few other ducks like canvasbacks WON'T leave. So to say there are none left to come down is invalid IMO.

The fact that YOUR spot didn't have ducks this year didn't mean that there weren't ducks this year just means they weren't in your spot. Look at the amount of rainfall this year and you will quickly see the ducks were scattered. However I have several freinds that hunted in MS all season and had respectable years and some GREAT hunts with them.

My last question is How many days did you hunt this year Birdroost to say there are less ducks and none left to come down?

I think Jeff and I were assuming the thread was serious.......maybe it was intended that way, but I have serious doubts, now.

Before it came-up, I thought there might be folks out there that thought there might be a chance to salvage an otherwise dismal season (for some) the final weekend with another 'front', and expect a huge migration just because our temperatures might get below freezing for 2 nights. i almost posted something as a joke to that effect......but didn't want to offend any youngsters, serious enough to appreciate 'seasoned' folks' experience.

If folks didn't learn anything from this season with record rainfall and the first real 'freeze-up' since 1997.....there may be a lot of truth in the claim......"there ain't no hope". This is definately one of those seasons to remember.....and one that should contribute to a person's experience level (if they half-way pay attention). I know I learned a lot this year......too bad it might be another 10 years before we have another freeze-up event like this year's. I might not be around to apply what I learned. Funny how your perspective on 'opportunitites' changes as you get older. I waited 13 years to have a freeze-up down here again........and it wasn't nearly as identical to my previous experience as I thought. As result, my expectations weren't met and I had to constantly 'speculate' to keep up with the birds from day-to-day. Some days we were right.....more days, we were wrong. Still learning.

Amen Anatidae, I really learned some different how to's with this year's event, maybe next year will be better or worst. Duck hunting or hunting & fishing, if you're like me, can differ from day to day, week to week, year to year and that is why I go every chance I get.

Theres ducks. Aint no federially inflating duck numbers, if they still think pintails are below long term averages. They're smarter, and had more choices this year. The hunters that could be described the same way, did ok. Not great on average but ok. Some of the rest of us knew it was feast or famine, and just made sure they made enough trips to hit the duck lotto where our number was up. Theres guys that hunt with me (my brother in fact) that hasnt had anywhere NEAR the duck season I have, because he laid out a couple times on trips that appeared stupid. He also hasn't done some stupid stuff that didnt pan out like we have. Regardless, the duck Gods have played a big game of mumbly peg with us, and my fingers got poked but not cut, so I'll just say, tommorrow will be the day. And tommorrow night, I'll say the same thing. And the night after that, wait till next year.

Oh and the few times my number has been called out lucky this season, sure put a lot of those sucky days outta my mind. then again its easier for me than most, with my kids, and friends and dogs I hunt with, ya can't help but have a good time.

IMHO... theres was plenty of birds this year but with record rainfall, there was too many un-hunted places for them to be. Yeah it sux to drive 2 hours or more to hunt and not kill but maybe 1 or 2 or not even fire a shot, but it beats sittin in a deer stand by yourself for 3 or 4 hours and not even see anything. I have had fun this year, ducks or no ducks.

Jeff, I am not a knee booter I know there are ducks . I hunt every weekend and every chance in between. I was just saying there seem to be less ducks every year. You must have never hunted from about 1995 & 2002. It did not matter how damn how cold it was, people in ark and ms were killing ducks.
