Anybody getting the opinion that the birds are getting call shy. We were in ms this weekend and saw more mallards this weekend then any other this year. Had a bunch of groups work but the wouldn't commit. Had 3 robos out and about 4 dozen decoys. Any opinions on why these ducks aren't wanting to come in.

Always call shy this time of year. No new birds in a few weeks. All ducks have Been called at since sept. Best thing to do now is go somewhere fresh.

Try just letting the ducks work with as little calling as possible, no calling if they'll still come in. I would experiment with the Robos, I have never used 3 at most one. You could also try another 10 or 15 doezen decoys.

We always do well with one bag of decoys, with four of them on a jerk string. I would loose the Robos they have been flared by them all the way down from Canada. Very lil calling, nothin loud, NO HAIL CALLS.

Yes, I would suggest that you:

1. Make sure you're where they want to be.
2. Only quack softly when they're down low just to finish them properly if necessary.

They've been looking at those robos since September all the way back up in Canada, and seen them in years past if they're adults. Those things lose effectiveness quickly. Take a hint from the real estate world; location, location, location.

Actually, I couldnt belive how loud and hard I had to call at mallards this weekend. I literally was pulling clothes off I was so hot, and my lungs where burning from calling so loud and hard. 4 of us hi balling and calling them all the way to the gun barrel, everytime we'd let off, they'd get wide and some pins would slide thru and steal em away. Never on a still day in the sunshine in a arkansas january ricefield have I ever called as loud and hard as I did this weekend, and it was awesome seeing them fat green heads hunting up that sound and sliding in front of the guns.Since we got these birds they have had to be trash talked out, and for some reason love diving on top of the pit.... Im loving it. Too bad we're gonna be froze out for the closing weekend if the weatherman is right.... I might have the bird flu in the morning and just get one mo smack in. travis

I second the robo-less rig. Birds often are attracted from a distance by spinning-wing decoys, but won't finish well with them, especially later in the season. I'd put em up and use a jerk-string or some form of motion decoy that's more subtle (bilge pump feeder decoy or mallard machine). Experiment with different calling too-- birds often like to hear less later in the year. Just my 2 cents...

Cut the moto off once they start breaking down. have the advantage of it, and take away the flair factor. we put the battery in the pit, and run 100 foot of speaker cord to the moto, and hook and unhook it (redneck remote). travis

I have found that a jerk string is one of my best friends while hunting.. its also become one of my favorite dance moves at the bar replacing my previous favorite "the weed eater"! Do the jerk string!
