boat motor problem ....

i am looking at buying a used boat and motor. love the boat but the motor a 2000 35 hp oil injected 2 stroke johnson that has sat up all summer.

it will crank and run but while you are running down the lake it loses power and cuts off and it takes about 5 minutes to get in cranked back up

anyone have a clue what might be wrong with it. I dont want to end up taking a bath on this deal

Ours did the same thing yesterday only it would not fire back up after the 3rd time this happened. The prob I believe is the carb has trash in it, and needs to be cleaned, maybe even a jet stopped up workin on ours tom.

sounds like it may be gettin hot! If it's sat up for any lenght of time it needs a water pump! Prolly never had one put in it. It may already be to late! Always check compression on a used motor before ever touching it! That will tell you more about the internal parts of an engine than anything!

That motor may or may not have a heat arlarm on it. Plus if it is loosing water pressure at high speed the sensor may not can read the temperature. These sensors must have water to work. They cannot read on air temperature alone. Taking it to a dealer is the smart thing to do. A fire and compression check is the first order of buisness at any reputable dealer!

it is most likley the carb. I use a 40h yam.. and mine did this to me it was just trash in the carb around $100 to fix no biggie

The one that crapped out on us yesterday was a 15 Johnson, my Tahatsu has been good to me though gonna through it on in the morning.

The same thing happened to me with a 30hp merc. My problem was the gas line was sucking air at the tank connection. Make sure there are no leaks anywhere in the fuel line and I know you know this but just in case make sure your gas tank vent is closed. Good Luck!

It doesn't completely sound like a carb problem. In my experience a carb problem doesn't normally make the motor die at high speeds. Typically the high speed jet gets clogged and the motor sputters at high speeds. It very well could be a carb problem as it's sat up a while, but definetly take it to a dealer as I am not convinced that's your problem.

BR is on to something. I have a 92 30hp yama 2 stroke oil injected motor that ran great, pissin good, but when I tried to get it up to speed the motor would drop down to an idle and do no more. Turns out the water pump was weak. Although the pump "looked" strong to my eye, at high speed was wasn't pumping enough water to cool.

Also, CHECK YOUR GAS LINE. I fought my motor for 3 months before I found a small gas line leak. Motor would run fine sometimes and crap the others. No top end power.


But if your taking it to a dealer, we are merely pissin into the wind by discussing it.

Get gas without Ethanol. That junk has been killin my 60 Yamaha.

i have a 90 30hp johnson, the fuel line inside the cowling going to the fuel pump started breaking down on the inside and was clogging up my fuel pump, i fought it halfway through a duck season and my uncle told me to take it off and he bumped it and rubber flakes started comming out of it,

Carb needs to be rebuilt. Rebuild kit should run you about 30 bucks. Pop the top off the gas tank and just make sure there is no suction. As far as a faulty alarm dribble some water on the head of the motor should not steam off just barely bubble if anything. My Johnson 15hp did the same thing take off plane out and die was loading up because of a cork float and the jets were clogged. Change the fuel lines while you are in there and dont leave ethanol gas in a carb for more than a week....that junk eats gaskets

For the record all the OMC's built from '97 on have alchohol proof gaskets in them. The 15 OMC did have a head problem and always ran much hotter than any other motor. OMC offered replacement heads for these motors for years free of charge if you took it back to your dealer. It could possibly be a vapor lock of some sort. Such as the fuel tank not venting. But there should be nothing in the carb to make one smother down from running wide open. That problem is somewhere else. Either heat related or fuel starvation. That motor was strange anyway. The fuel pump and the oil pump were one in the same. If the diaphram has a hole in it on either side it possibly may not pump enough fuel or oil depending on which side the diaphram is bad on. They aint cheap either! Need to have it checked by a dealer!
