Interesting problem with boat

Postby torch » Tue Dec 29, 2009 5:04 am

We have an 1860 with a 115 engine. We were running the Sunflower Saturday and all of he sudden we developed a miss in the engine. Got back to the shop and brother rebuilt the carbs and still a miss. Narrowed it down to number 3 cylinder and thought maybe a coil, so we swapped number 2 with number 3 coil and still a miss. Ok its not electrical so maybe still in the fuel. Got a six gallon tank with fresh gas and ran 10 minutes still a miss. I am starting to run out of stuff to check and happen to notice water leaking between head and block. Check compression again and let it sit on number 3 and it leaks down. So I am assuming I have a blown head gasket and the miss is water entering the cylinder. HAS ANYONE EVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH AN OUTBOARD?

Alan is that a merc? And is it a 2 stroke or 4? If it's a 2 stroke there is no head gasket to blow. That's a lost foam block. Sounds like you've burnt a piston.

Any chance the plug wires are not fully connected to the power head? I had this happen one time and it "appeared to be connected, but inside the rubber grommet, the matal was not connected. Even if it still has the factory tie, check it and see...mine did, and I spent some change checking everything else.

It has 4 individual coils, they are all firing.

Mine did too, and would idle and rev when sitting on the trailer with mufflers on and was actually getting a spark via test light...you put it in the water and under load and it would balk. Connection from coil to plug was there, but not good.

Torch,

sounds like you answered your own question? I say blown head gasket. Maybe it was that "stunt driver" you had driving it!!!

Yeah that SOB missed his calling. He needs to go to Hollywood and see if they will give him a job tearing up stuff.
