Boat Trailer Tag?

Postby Don Miller » Mon Dec 21, 2009 7:13 am

I have never had a boat trailer tag but this weekend was told by the federal warden I need to get one if I intended to hunt there anymore.
My question is.....Will I have to pay back taxes on the boat trailer tag if the boat trailer has never been registered? I bought the boat and tailer new in 1996.

Let me tell you about the great state of Louisiana...... About 3 years ago, I borrowed my neighbors utility trailer to take my 4wheeler to the shop to get something fixed....his light wires were too short to reach my receptical on my truck. Bad idea, but I took the chance of getting to the shop and back without lights.......got caught.....not only did he give me a ticket for no lights on my trailer, but he also wrote me one for not having the trailer's registration with me......who ever hear of such.......well, it's a law down here

Trailers are not titled in Mississippi and are not taxed like cars. Just give the info, pay the $15-$25.00 and go on.

I'm afraid we are about to see the same in MS. It's never been enforced here but with tax revenues drying up, it will be. I have no problem with paying for a tag for a trailer. I've just never bought one before.

Yes you probably will. If you try to register it you will have to show where you or someone paid sales tax on it in MS. If you show them that on the bill of sale the yes you could owe penalties back to the date of sale. Just do like someone else said. Claim it was homemade or you resurected a trailer that had been discarded!

Not to hijack the thread big Don, but I have a similar question. We all know how cantankerous trailer lights can be...much less boat trailer lights...add the fact that we put them in and take them out on what equates to a little more than a flooded fourwheeler trailer and you get a trailer with busted lights, tore up wires, and a tag that you cant keep on the trailer. I finally had enough of it all and I just keep the tag in my truck and I went to the 18 wheeler trailer place and bought some big adhesive reflective stips to put on the rear crossmember of my trailer. What are the chances this is legit? Its not a huge boat and you can see my turn signals and stuff from my truck. Just dont want to get one of these "revenue builder" tickets.

This is what I was told when I went to get a tag for a trailer that did not have a tag for the last 10 years.

Some trailers ARE titled. I have titles on several of mine.
Ya'll are acting like a bunch of Obama Democrats not wanting to pay your taxes!
Come on guys, be legal, buy the tag.

Are you sure you haven't been carrying your boat around in the back of your truck until now?
