Custom Rifle Build

Postby DanP » Wed Dec 16, 2009 11:14 pm

I'm about to build a 7mm STW, I've got an action, krieger is turning the barrel, H&S stock. My delima is who is going to put it together. My normal gunsmith is booked solid (tony in starkvegas), I'm wanting something in a 2-3 month time frame. Krieger can do it for a reasonable price and time, but I'm curious if anyone has experience with delta region gunsmiths?

Lugs lapped, pillar/glass bedded, bolt trued etc...

Thanks for your input,
Dan

I heard recently that he is. What about Oddie Livingston? I saw a 7mm STW that he did for a buddy and it was mighty nice.

When you "build" a custom rifle, how are you doing it? Picking a stock rifle and then have the gunsmith start doing things to make it more accurate or do you get an action from some where and go from there? I'm curious because I've alway thought about one day having a custom rifle. Nosler has "custom" rifles for something like $3,500 for their top of the line and $2,700 for their Model 48 Sporter. I like the looks of the Sporter and they guarantee sub MOA with Nosler Ammo.

I picked up a beater 7 mag model 700 from a pawn shop for $200. Basically just bought it for the action. Krieger is turning a heavyweight sporter barrel (fluted) for me and they priced the package put together on my stock at $1100. This includes lapping lugs, truing bolt face, bedding, etc. Some of that may not be necesary but if your going to invest in a custom rifle might as well go all the way. HS stock your looking at $350.

So I'm looking at $2k by the time its all said and done with shipping tax etc.

Sounds like I need to give Mr. Swann a call. Thanks for the input keep it coming.

It is still open, but Bill's son Tim does most of the work now. Tim is a very good gunmith and I would have the utmost confidence in his work. His website is www.billscustomautomatics.com (I think) Google it if the link doesn't work.

One of the best gunsmiths in the entire country is Leonard Baity of Baity's Custom Gun Works in North Carolina. He has built rifles that have set numerous world records in the 1000 yard benchrest catagory. I shoot in IBSA matches and the gun I use he built. His turn around time is not fast but the quality is worth the wait. I know you are not wanting a benchrest gun built but he also builds custom deer rifles too. On a side note, the barrel on my benchrest gun was turned by Krieger and allows me to shoot just about half-minute groups. I am sure you will like it. Loenard's phone number is: 1-336-667-8785

I've got a LSR in 260. 24" barrel that shoots lights out. I'm talking 3shot groups at 100y in the .2's, occ .1's. 10 shot 300 yard groups that measure 1.5 -1.8 and change. It is a heavy gun that weighs in at 14lbs with scope. I wouldn't hesitate to get one from them again. Other good smiths are GA Precision (thinking about a 280AI from them after Christmas) and Patriot Arms (now called something else).

All of these guys are good. http://www.6mmbr.com/gunsmiths.html

Also you could consider getting a Cooper rifle but it sounds like you are too far down the road to back track to a Cooper.

Last but not least at all is Eddybo. He lives down around McComb and has a shop and range and the whole deal. Nicest guy in the world who turns out good stuff. He refurbished my 7mag. I shoots solid 1/2 MOA now. Go to MDWFP and go to the Guns and Ammo section. Give him the ole "hail call" and he'll respond. He deer hunts alot so he won't be able to get it finished till Feb probably.

Also you need to get a better trigger. Jewell or Rifle Basix are my two favorite.

BTW what twist did you get?
I hope you reload 8)

Billy Tierce, in Utica biult a 308 for me and I was impressed as the detail he puts in a gun and how accurate it was. I now have a 7 mag biult by Wells rifle shop in Waynesboro and it is UNREAL accurate also.
