Help, need underground fence

Postby brandonvet » Wed Dec 09, 2009 8:48 am

...we recently moved and my new pup (8 mo. old BLF) is terrorizing my neighbors. Never had a problem with my older dog, she pretty much hangs out at the house; never needed a fence for her, just a small pen at times, or a crate. I'm gonna have to put in an underground fence for this new dog; my neighbors are complaining.
So...anybody use one? Got any info on a good one? I've looked at some...Mack's has a wireless fence, but not sure how well it will work, and it only has a 1/2 acre radius, I think. :|

So where you live you can't put up a kennel or an adequate fence? I ask because I'm not much of a fan of hiring an appliance to do the training, when a simpler approach would be effective confinement. I realize that there are sometimes housing associations in the way of such things, so that's why I've asked.

I have a 5 acre lot in the county...but there is a "homeowner's association" with covenants that require dogs to be either behind a wooden fence or contained within an invisible/underground fence. The covenants specifically say no cyclone fence or dog "pens". :x

I got this one and I have no problems with it and I have a 87 pound beast that I was kind of worried about him running through it but he hasn't yet. I have a 1.75 acer yd.

I've been able to get away with not having a "fence" for a little while now, and it's only recently become a problem. The dog goes where I go, so she's not home alone all day...it's just when I air her in the morning, go take a shower, come back outside and she's at the neighbors.
Obviously, I can put her in a crate or hidden pen for a while, but eventually, I'm gonna have to do something a little more permanent for times when I can't supervise her. Surely some of ya'll have experience with these fences.

I'll tell you what I have the cheap $99 dollar fence pet safe brand from Walmart. I was going to get that sport dog one but this was recommended to me from a buddy. It has worked great and you can't beat the price. I had to buy one extra set of wire and flags because I have it going around 2 acres. My lab took well to it only took about a week to get him fully trained. The collar has three settings. I would recommend it especially for the money!

The biggest problem with the underground fence is it may keep your dog in your yard BUT it will not keep other dogs out . My sister's dog was attacked by a pitt in her yard , and her dog would only run to the boundry of her yard then back to the garage where it finally ended !

Great point. Further, a dog that comes into the yard may entice yours to endure the limitations of the e-fence and leave the yard. E-fences work in both directions, so when yours tries to come home...know what I mean? It's happened.

Honestly, if your dog is obedient, and the circumstanes you mentioned are the only rationale, why not just supervise his airing time, take him inside, and shower or whatever with him indoors. These e-fences are not the panacea they're perceived to be.

BrandonVet............I enclosed a smaller portion of my yard (4 acres total) with fencing run to the house and enclosing an exterior door which I put a dog door on. Fenced in area is about the size of a typical backyard. I used 5' painted aluminum decorative fencing which no HOA will have a problem with. It doesn't block the view, and cost about the same as wood fencing. If you want to see my setup, holler.......
