me, too and the .444 doesn't kick that hard. was with a guy shooting a .308 he had hand loaded that was whippin on him! had heard the 35whelan was a mule, too.

from http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm

Caliber rifle weight - recoil energy - recoil velocity
35 Whelen (200 at 2675) 8.0 22.6 13.5
.44 Rem. Mag. (240 at 1760) 7.5 11.2 9.8
.444 Marlin (240 at 2400) 7.5 23.3 14.2
.45-70 (300 at 1800) 7.0 23.9 14.8

Recoil between the .35, .444 and .45-70 are all so close that you really shouldn't be able to tell the difference.

You boys that shoot this caliber may can answer a question for me? I read somewhere that .38 and .357 could be shot out of a 35 Whelen. May have read it on Wikepedia which isn't the best place to get info. Is that true that .38 and .357 can be fired out of that caliber barrel?

I have a slip on LimbSaver on my Handi .444...shot dang near a whole box with no pain what so ever. It does have a bit of muzzle flip...wonder if porting would help settle it down

got muzzle flip on my handi .270 as well - short barrel on it, too - it is actually worse than my .444 though.
