Hunting the Missippi River, Any Pointers?

Postby ballcoach » Fri Nov 20, 2009 10:33 am

Plan on launching around Tunica, do you have to have a Mississippi, or Arkansas hunting permit. I have 1648 with 40hp motor outboard. Any advice is welcome.

Thanks,

Coach

if you found a bass buggy type boat don't use it in the river

wow...some people amaze me

That said, and this is in all seriousness,if you've never ran the river...and I mean really been on it, your setting yourself and your loved ones for a visit to the funeral home. The MS river isnt just a deep ditch that is wide open. There are rock dikes, sandbars that are just under the water, and all sorts of stuff that will hurt you. If you tear the foot off your motor, you can possible be screwed. That river don't play. Its spooky even for those that have ran it for years. With it as high as it is now, your asking for trouble.

Delta is right about the perils of the river, BUT that being said.

You can make it safer.

Go out after you can see, dont try to go out before daylight, especially if you do not know exactly where you are going. try to make a short as run as possible in that small of a boat.

Have someone with you in case of trouble.

Have an extra or auxillary motor to get you out of traffic and to the bank if you loose your main motor.

Have a float plan.

Have a marine radio and know how to use it cell phones in a waterproof bag.

Watch the river most of the time you can see something just a little different if there is something under the water. SOmetimes is just a very little difference that tells you something is not right.

Which Lic you need depends on what state the season is open in. This weekend you must have an ARK Lic to hunt the river and you should be very carefull about where you are cause MS season aint open. Since you dont know where you will b,e I would wait until both seasons are open before I went.

+1 to that and I'll add this:
Have you ever ridden a bicycle down the interstate and have a convoy of semi-trucks haul booty past you goin about 80 mph? ...me either, but I would imagine that it would kinda feel like that when your in a 1648 w/ a 40 hp motor and a barge comes along down the river; except the barge will be throwing a 5 foot wake.

5 foot might be one that aint loaded, them things can get vicious. I don't care how long you been runnin a boat, you had better have a lifejacket on when on the river.
