respect on WMAs

Postby waterfowlr03 » Wed Feb 04, 2004 3:35 pm

This might have been discussed many times, but i was wanting some input on the proper reaction when you've got an a**hole that sets up 100 yrds from you on a WMA. Being public land do you let it slide or stand up for your hardwork and dedication to the sport? What are the ethics?

I think crow has the best answer to this question, or at least my favorite answer.

Waterfowler, "practice" duck calling technique anytime a bird even looks their way. Then skybust the hell out ef em when they do. Thats what they do to me. Other than that, not much yall can do. Ive had people set up directly across from our spread(50 yards away), even seen my dad get shot in the face, in wich the BB had to be removed by a doctor. Had two guys show up 10 minutes before shootin time and pull up in the toolies between our blind and our dekes, when we suggested that they "may be kinda close" they said "naw, we got a good spot" let me tell ya, they were 5 yards in front of us, didnt have a single decoy, but, why would they need any since our 100 looked pretty good. They split when our muzzles blasted thier ear drums out. The nerve of some is remarkable. Only had one instance this year, three guys came marching across the pond, I let them get about 10 yards from my dekes before I lit them up. They politely turned and marched out. This was on the last day of the season, they understood they were late, as I could hear them saying such. So, some have no ethics. How people can show up 15 minutes before shootin time is beyond me. Im "always" on the spot 1 hour before shootin time setting up. Some just do things differantly, aint much can be done. Suspect thats why you hear stories of boat trailers being pushed in the water and tires bieng flattened. Yall have a nice day 8)

I've never been one for more rules and laws, but this is reaching the point that something needs ta be done.

It would be simple enough.Make it a rule at WMAs and Fed Refuges that you could set up no closer than 200-300yds from an existing group.A couple of tickets would solove this $#!+ PDQ!!!

I hear ya! That may be why some have a 5:00am rule. 200-300 yrds maybe kinda tuff to enforce....would boil down to a "he said they said" as to who came first. My local WMA isnt very big, so, you have to respect anothers space. I myself dont want to be shot...so, i stay away from others. This is just one of many problems with WMAs. I have a major problem with people leaving garbage behind. I could always tell when someone visited "my" spot by the Twix wrappers piling up, I packed em out when I left. Yall have a nice day 8)

I have asked some that have set up too close to join me. Some have taken the invite and enjoyed themselves. The ones that didn't take the invite and refused to move, regretted it. On public land you can only be nice to a point. I wish that MSDWFP would have some sort of a hunting etiquette course for WMA waterfowl hunters.

This is the perfect solution to the problem. When you get a group of "duck hunters" that set up within 100 yards of you and start all of their ritiuals, of hailcalls, trying to call, and skyblasting. Pick up all of your decoys, making as much noise as possible. Yell at your dog, cuss alot, and move closer to them. Set up again, still cussing, yelling at your dog, and throw out as many decoys as you have, and blow that duck call like there is no tommorow. The look on their face is worth all of the trouble. And if they dare say something, just look over and just as nice as you can be say "WELCOME TO WMA DUCK HUNTING". Most likely they are new to this great, God given sport that we have, and hopefully they will learn a valuable lesson. Maybe!?!

This is one I'd like ta have explained to me.I can't imagine it serving any purpose at all.Sounds like it would just create a "race to the holes".May the fastest or craziest boat or 4-wheeler win.

Back in the good ole day's,if the 5am rule was in effect, I imagine we would've had a YZ250 to win the race to the hole, whatcha think? :D Can you see me hauling booty down that road passing people  ?

in Va and some places in NC..the WMA's have blinds that you can ONLY hunt in if you find them w/ your boat..NO EXECPTIONS!!
I may go to Heaven, or I may go to hell....But one thing is for certain..It'll be after Duck season!!

I myself see no logic in the 5:00am rule. If somebody wants to spend the night in the marsh...more power to em. Most often when a rule such as this is made, "they" are trying to protect you from yourself. More than likely "they" want to concentrate the hunters to make it easier to catch violaters. I have posted in the past about how opposed to a draw or lottery system I was. Now I am beginning to rethink that position. After some of the crap I have had to endure the past three years, I am willing to at least hear a proposed framework for this idea.

Guys please, we have seen every scenario imaginable a couple of times on this board. Lets not exume them.

I'll agree with that point benny. What will it do to lease prices?

It will either run a lot of folks out of duck hunting and prices will drop or the will shoot straight up.(again)
