35 H&R wheelen accuracy and recoil
I started sighting my 35 in yesterday and all i can say is OUCH!!!
my shoulder is killing me after about 18 rounds. I gave up and will try again after i heal back up. the gun was holding a tight group "1.5" at 100 yards" but then it went all over the place. I really think i was pulling or something but i will wait a day to two and try again. the scope is a 3x9x50 nikon buck master and i hope it can handle the recoil!!

Go get you a Caldwell Lead sled.. The scope should be fine for it.. My guess is your flinching.. My groups got real good after the lead sled.

Re: 35 H&R wheelen accuracy and recoil
I sighted mine in out of a Lead Sled. I keep hearing off all this kicking and i've had mine for over a year and haven't noticed it at all. I have it on a T/C encore pro hunter and it may be the sweetest shooting gun I own. If you shot all of that over a short period of time the barrel was definitely too hot. I don't ever shoot over 6 or 8 times over a 30 minute period and then i wait a while.
Re: 35 H&R wheelen accuracy and recoil
I got one of these barrels for my T/C too. I use a lead sled and did not realize how bad it was kicking until I decided to squeeze one off standing. I had the scope turned up to 10 and crawled up on it. BAD DECISION. It cracked me in the eye. I thought the 3.5 #4s in the turkey rig were bad.
It was floating when I pulled this prank and I decided to stop because I thought the barrel was to hot. When I got home and started cleaning the gun I realized the scope base was loose. I tightened it up and took it back out this past Saturday. More punishment and 6 rounds later I noticed the top reticle was broken. I have changed scopes and I guess will be at it again next weekend.

My 35 Encore has the Flex Tech stock on it, and this weekend I took out my Uncles old 30-06 Remington 700 and shot it.. Ouch is right.... That stock and limbsaver recoil pad really makes a HUGE difference.

shot mine this weekend after getting it back from remington. I shot it freehanded initially and recoil was "sharp" but not too bad. I ain't that big either. I then put it in the lead sled and had the "ole primitive weapon" hitting a disc blade at 400yds

+100 on limbsaver recoil pad, especially for rotator cuff surgery shoulders. they make them in slip-on so you don't have to drill your stock.

me, too and the .444 doesn't kick that hard. was with a guy shooting a .308 he had hand loaded that was whippin on him! had heard the 35whelan was a mule, too.
Re: 35 H&R wheelen accuracy and recoil
As he was handing me the receipt for the barrel Jason asked if I had a limbsaver recoil pad on my rifle. This should have been a clue. What can I say, I am a slow learner. From what you guys are saying I think I may have to get one. Do they make one to go around the eye piece..ha ha.
Re: 35 H&R wheelen accuracy and recoil
I have shot lots of guns and the 35 wheelen in the handi-rifle has a greater recoil than a 300 mag. I added a sims recoil pad and lead in the stock which reduced the recoil significantly. Spend 40 bucks and get a recoil pad. You will be glad you did.

I always have had better luck with a 1 piece base on the scope on my TC Guns. Doesn't matter how tight the 2 piece base was.
It may be the scope. Wouldn't be the first one to jump around. Don't care who made it.
May be flinching.
Make sure you let it cool down some.
Get a shooting jacket to help with the recoil. I shoot a .338 Win Mag in a Model 70 Mountain Rifle with synthetic stock. Hot handloads.......I will knock your teeth out shooting it off the bench. I like the jacket. Lead slead is on the X-mas list.
No Blood Trails to follow.
