Re: Pods at Outfitter???
Dang Guess I shouldn't have asked.......... Yes I along with others are really careful with shot placement. I don't shoot if I don't think I can make an ethical kill BUT there are instances where you are a little shook up, limbs, distance misjudged etc. SH& happens. I don't ever plan on having a wreck or having any kind of cancer either but I got INSURANCE!!!

Re: Pods at Outfitter???
I agree with Duckaholic. I used to shoot anectine but I had a few close encounters and got scared to shoot it anymore, this will be my first year without it. I started shooting pods when I was nine years old(actually mine wasn't a pod, it was a needle and it was liquid) and quit last year. I think (BR549) that you are implying that the guys that use it, might shoot a good deer in the ass or leg or gut because they know sooner or later that he will die from the poison. I sure hope noone that hunts is this stupid to do that. You still practice daily to ensure that you can hit the deer in the rite spot just in case that poison might actually fail, which 9.9 times out of 10, we (us pod shooters) have already tested it whether it be on a frog or a stray dog around the house. I think you got a little defensive about this. My question is, why do you care if we shoot poison? in my 18 years of bow hunting I have lost two deer and I had what I thought was a pretty good front shoulder shot. Guess what, I wasn't shooting poison on either one of those deer I lost. haven't lost a deer since. this will be the first year that I haven't shot pods. If I gig one today and lose it, you better bet your sweet booty that I will be at Bills saturday buying me a pod.

Really its legal and in my eyes it just another ethical step in helping game recovery, so why not shoot it..........

Well what happens is u get to depending on the annectine doing its job instead of your arrow! This leads u to sometimes making shots you shouldn't have made! U think all u have to do is hit him he will die! That's just not always the case! For several reasons u shouldn't depend on it. 1- you might not have enough in the pod to put a big deer down. 2- your pod may not open right or at the right time. 3- your poision may not be any good. (old or outdated). Its just a helper. If it was so ethicall then why is it banned in 48 states? Why is it that no trophy organization will allow its use? Why is it u can't use it on any federal reserve? But yea u right same song different year! Learn how to hunt and shoot or stay at home!
Re: Pods at Outfitter???
Yea I went thru that mentality myself bout 25 or 30 years ago! I lost something like 4 deer shootin pods. 2 in one year! Haven't shot a pod since! Granted u shoot enough deer u gonna lose a few regardless of what u shoot. Gun bow crossbow with or without a pod. I just don't agree with concept of it any more. To many times I've seen that same mentality! I've killed enough in my lifetime and u can bet before I shoot one today he'll break at least 140 and aint gonna have to track him very far! Over the years u will learn that too! I've been blessed to be able to kill some of tge game I have and just got more appreciative of the opportunity just to go and enjoy the nature instead of the killing!

No where and i mean no where do I state that I was dependant on annectine....I have never and will never take a bad shot because I think annectine will do my killing for me....there are many on here that will attest to my ability..........with a stick and string
Life's too damned complicated to make it too damned complicated

I never said that u did either! If you took it that way or got ur feelings hurt by it I appoligize! But there are a lot of "bowhunters" out there today that do think like that!
Re: Pods at Outfitter???
I make my own, with water balloons and dental floss.
Cut large end off balloon, slide it lip first onto arrow far enough to fold it back up and leave an 1/8th inch gap at end of arrow. Tie a piece of dental floss around middle of balloon and again at top of arrow, roll balloon lip back up to top of arrow, pull lip out and fill with poison.
Takes about 15 mins to make three.
....and you don't have the added weight of the plastic in the pod.

I practice with my hunting set up only. If I am going to shoot pods in a hunting set up that is what I practice with. They change the flight a lot.

The stuff thay sell, at least where I have bought it in the last few years is not anectine. If it wasnt raining I would go get the bottle and tell you what the new stuff is.

Re: Pods at Outfitter???
Been bowhunting for almost 30 years and I agree with BR549. Wish they would go ahead ban it like the other 48 states. Used it for the first 10 years or so but not for last 20. Shot a doe yesterday and she goes maybe 50 yards. A sharp broadhead through both lungs is way deadly. I hear what everyone is saying but in "the real world" say you have a 150 class deer and you only have a shot at his butt, how many would take that shot. My guess is almost everyone. My 2 cents.
Re: Pods at Outfitter???
Exactly my point HD! There are several places you can stick a deer to kill him quickly and efficiently. But it takes precision shooting! You can't do that with a blob on the end of an arrow! Especially a blob that varies in weight from arrow to arrow! There are enough variables in the field hunting (twigs, limbs, leaves things you don't always see) without having to add another one! Yes there is a place to shoot one in the butt too and put him down quick (kidneys) but most don't know where it is or how to get an arrow to it from some angles! A well placed arrow does wonders. Most won't make it out of sight! People might tell you they wouldn't take that shot but I'd be willing to bet 8 out of 10 that use the stuff would if it was the only shot they had!

I wouldn't take the shot nor would anyone I hunt with. Would you?

As do I. I don't have any pods, not that I am against them, just curious as to how they affect flight for those that do use them.

ahhh, the smell of the fall 'morn.
the burnt oranges, bright reds and firey yellows that call about the time of year....
"wildfowl" winging from there northern climes, ole "mossy horn" showing a swoll neck................yea, all these things come to pass each year, as does the age old question.........................who's the most hypocritical 'hunter' on the planet??????
is it the "muzzleloader" as defined by today's market???? or, heaven forbid the bow hunter slinging his 'pods' on account of "not loosing a deer". doesn't really matter, b/c they (the 'primitive weapons hunter) evidently can do whatever they please...cute....and funny...............

Re: Pods at Outfitter???
Pods Use continues to give Mississippi Bowhunters a black eye. I have lived across the nation and been active in 7 different state bowhunting org (president of one) the past 23 years and the sentiment is pretty strong against the pod and the hunters that use it. IMO it has no place in our sport. Bowhunting is a close sport. The possession of the Anectine(sp) is illegal unless you have a prescription because it is a controlled substance furthermore it is illegal to use on federal or state land. The physcological need for the bowhunter to use a pod is because of doubt and incompentence that bowhunter has in his ability to make a clean humane shot, period. Every bowhunting org across the nation is against the pod. It's mere use is only more fuel for the ANTIS to use against bowhunting. I shot this doe friday. A well placed shot, at a close distance produces a quickly dispatched animal. She walked off 10 steps and ate another persimmon and fell over dead.
