I was thinking about the Mallard box..and a Canada nest...the other day when I was shootin' up w/ my 35 MM..

last year the Mallards/Canadas laid their eggs on an island out in the middle of this little pond...well ends up..they laid them near the bank..and the eggs ended up under water...by the time we found them they were too far gone..

Anybody have any plans for the boxes...I've seen back home the refuges use huge tires on a pole for the Geese..How much different are Mallard boxes from Wood Duck boxes.....any ideas...
I may go to Heaven, or I may go to hell....But one thing is for certain..It'll be after Duck season!!

Dang good idea to challange everyone jdbuckshot. If at least half of the people on this list do it that would mean over 1000 boxes.

duck boxs

Postby jdbuckshot » Thu Jan 29, 2004 3:29 pm

even if we got 500 up, and say at the least 4 ducks per box, that 2000 ducks that may not have been here before the boxes were put up. i think we should push this!

the wood duck boxes work great for wood ducks, but a mallard nest structure works better for mallards. It is a cylinder made of hog wire with hay or astroturf on the inside.

How bout this, send Delta Waterfowl a check for $20 earmarked for hen houses and let them build and set up a fat head house in the breeding grounds.

Make sure you use rough-sawn lumber so the little fellas can climb out - their footies don't work so good on smooth pine. If all you have is pine, tack a cloth from the hole to the bottom so they'll have a grip.
