Jobs???
Jobs???
Any of you guys know of any good paying jobs in the Oxford area?
I'm currently a manufacturing engineer and I also Currently HATE my job. I know times are hard
right now and I'm proud to have a good paying job, but man I'm so burned out with this line of work
I definately need a change of pace. I know how to do so many things that I need
to try to broaden my horizons. I always say when you have to force yourself out of bed in the mornings
to go to a place that you dred or can't stand going to, that it's time to move on to bigger and better things.
My situation now is I can't do anything probably until after the first of the year. I have a baby boy coming in
November and I will need my vacation time that I have built up, but after that I'm gonna have to find something
or I will go insane.
If anyone knows of anything around that area that would have a salary range $65-$70k that isn't in manufacturing
that could use a very well rounded employee with management experience, please let me know.
I would love to get into the construction side of things. I have a drafting degree and have been drawing for 15 years. I'd
really like to get into construction estimating, or project management for a construction firm. If any of you Oxford or Tupelo
guys know of any thing please let me know. I live in Water Valley and would like to keep my commute within 45 miles.
thanks
Bryan

Re: Jobs???
I'd like to make $65k - $70k annually as well, and I have a MBA?!?!?! Have you looked in the Grenada area?
Good Luck.
Oh, and tell your wife to think 'November 15' for the son. That is a great day.

Yeah, I threw a couple resumes that way already.
And Jack, our due date is around mid Nov. so it may be that day.
Sounds like you may need a career path change like me. He!! I'll take a pay
cut if its something I enjoy doing.

Re: Jobs???
I have an MBA too. Which means NOTHING in todays job market.
Try going from $80-$100k/yr to $0. That is how the real estate market is now.
I have been looking for a job for about 3 months now. Have had one interview....cellular south offerd me $30k to work 6days a week in the retail office.
No thanks, i think i will collect aluminum cans.

Re: Jobs???
Good luck on your search. I'm in Oxford. Was laid off in May. (Completely blindsided BTW) Had one solid lead and interview mid July. I got that job and just started last week. Problem is I now have to commute to Memphis every day. Had a coworker in Tupelo get laid off at the same time. He has his first solid interview coming up. He was told over 60 people applied for the position which is just unheard of. Lot of folks out there slinging resumes around right now. Whatever you do don't quit the one you have without a new one.

Have faith guys. I got laid off April of 2008 and didn't find anything until July of 08. Took the job on faith that I'd make decent money..on the road all the time w/ decent salary and expenses paid. Got my first years commission/bonus check last week and it put me over 100K! Wow...way more than I expected and it makes those lonely nites on the road worth it. I came so close to quitting 'cause no one would tell me how much I could make and there is no way to determine it on your own. They continually said "trust us you'll be happy"...turns out they were right and you actually can trust some companies these days. By the way, in four months of looking for a job and this was back before it got crazy, I got one response from about fifty resumes I sent out and I had the one interview and got the job...hang in there..good things still do happen and if it can happen for me then it can for you as well!

yep am there now, and guessing its about as bad as the automotive mfg markets...same situation here, MBA still carries some weight IMO but its a buyers market
my experience thus far has been if you are even slightly varied in education, experience or certifications you are going to get beat out by another candidate that matches their needs/desires/requirements perfectly
tough job market for sure

Re: Jobs???
Tuff market for sure. I hate to hear that you don't enjoy your job. I know the feeling, it has seemed that every job I have worked, 75% of it I didn't enjoy. Then again, 3 jobs with the top salary of 24k makes those 50+ hour work weeks dreadful.
I am currently looking also. I would like to say, I am looking for the job where I could see putting down some roots and staying for some time. My last 3 jobs, were that of a way to find another. Nothing I ever looked at as far as long term. Now, at 24, I want a job that 1) I don't mind doing, 2) one I can sleep after doing, 3) one where I may just earn a check that breaks my $500 dollar weekly goal. My goals, are not quite as high as yours, and my experience is no where near. Even so, finding a job that allows me to make 30k plus, with my record, is the equivalent of finding a lost duck in the amazon rain forest. What I wouldn't give to have a stellar track record.
Nessecity and reality is a biotch. I am now looking at doing something, that I hate, to make ends meat. One word of advice, always have another lined up before you quit the one at hand. Pool your contacts, find a place you want to work for, and keep after it. Good Luck, and I hope the best for you.
Feather, ya'll hiring? For 100k a year, I have no problem leaving my family (not married of course and no kids), and would even entertain the thought of giving up hunting

Re: Jobs???
I have the most boring job in the free world..I sell research journals and databases to university libraries and medical research libraries. You know the classic Playboy librarian...she does not exist! But I'm thankful to have it and I was very thankful when I got it. It damn near sucked all the life from me though not knowing what I was gonna make and having to learn crap that was about as interesting as counting sand particles on a beach...frikken detail is unreal in this. Ya'll got any publishing experience shoot me a pm cause we're always hiring...did I mention that my boss is a ball buster? Didn't think so..she likes me though! Good luck guys..you'll find something good.

Re: Jobs???
Not trying to put a damper on your search for a different career, but you might be hard-pressed finding an estimating position in comm construction without a very, very stacked portfolio of previous projects under your belt; especially in your salary range. Again, not trying to rain on your parade here, but there are several companies out there who are turning down qualified estimators because of a lack of work. If looking for an estimating position, you may need to look at a smaller salary prior to gaining experience in commercial estimating. I wish you the best of luck on your job search, and hope you prove me wrong.

What's funny is that I just sent the library a revised list of the journals my department no longer wants and the subscriptions we want added.

Re: Jobs???
I am pretty sure that Yates laid off and placed estimatics in other jobs before we ever heard recession. From what I understand they saw the writing on the wall due to lack of bids and would imagine others have followed suit. My uncles construction crew has left the metro for texas military job due to lack of work. Its tuff out their right now and they say it could be another 6 months before the unemployment starts to fall, but that could just be speculators trying to build confidence. I have had to make some tuff decisions this year to position my company but I do feel that once the market returns we will be ahead of the curve.
One of our ventures we usually have trouble finding qualified people due to factory work around here but now the stack of apps is tall with people normally we would be looking to hire just don't have the space or the work load. I say that to say make the most of what you got because its a tuff market and consider yourself lucky each day. Good luck in your search. Although job and fun are both three letter words they are at the end of the spectrum. Don't get me wrong I love my job, but every day it feels like a job and not fun.
