Tractor Choice ?

Postby judge jb » Fri Nov 09, 2001 6:36 pm

i have made up my mind to get a new Tractor for Christmas.... have been running a 3000 Ford desiel for more years than i care to remember....
have made a choice between a New Holland or a Massey-Ferguson... front wheel drive assist, in the mid 40 hp range with shuttle shift... the only reason i don't concider a Deere is because a dealer {waranty} is not close by... looking for some experienced input....

{yea yea, i know i will have to drive the 85 SUV for another 4 years...} i need some serious food plots and general maintainance....

Judge, between the two i would go with the massey. We have two and don't have any trouble with them. I would suggest that if you are getting the front wheel assist to get the industrial size tires on it.

Have you considered a Kubota?? We have an 80hp one, and you can't tear them up. The two massey's would have been Kubotas but we couldn't find used ones like we wanted. Give them Kubotas a look. Andy

JB, I was looking at a 35hp model Ford earlier in the year. I had a 1710 Ford for 15 years with no problems at all, except for general maintenance and the occasional tearing up of doing more than I should have. I did have a 3000 for a while and it is a workhorse, but for the money and power that these new tractors have, bigger isn't always better. I'd save some money and look at the new 30-35hp Fords and go from there...personally, I wouldn't consider anything other than Ford, Kubota, or Deere in that order.

Judge, you better go GREEN! That Deere dealer will still be in business 40 years from now, and it will probably be that long before you have trouble with the Deere.

Well I can't recommend a particular tractor but I can tell you my experience. I bought a knew tractor back in May of this year. I went with a Branson 35hp 4x4. The information I recevied from various sources at the time was that all tractor engines were being made over in Korea...thats right even Deer and Case. Supposedly many of the tracor makes were coming off the same production line. Now, I have never varified this so I don't know how true it is. Anyway the engine on my Branson is a diesel made by Mitsubishi and it runs good. However, the tractor has been in the shop once and is back in there at present for electrical/computer problems. First, a computer chip went bad and the damn thing wouldn't start and now there appears to be a problem with the glow plugs. This is all under warranty but has been a pain in the butt. I am very dissapointed to say the least. You spend a lot of money on a new piece of equipment you don't expect it to have these problems. I have lost some confidence in it at this point, I sure hope its not a lemon (or maybe that would be a good thing?).

I will say that when its running it takes care of bisiness and the four wheel drive is definetly the way to go...that is a very nice feature and I use it regularly.

I guess my point is if I had to do it again I would probably go with a name brand (depending on service proximity) like Kubota.

Anyway, you might want to do a little research on where the tractor engine is made and where it is assembled and such. If you do find something out please enlighten me.

Hey Judge,
I know the green ones have a heck of a reputation, but feel like ya have to pay extra for the name. As for the choice you
have listed, I think they are both good
machines. I personally own a massey 283.
It's a bit larger than what you're lookin at,
but bought it new six years ago & the ONLY
thing I haven't been pleased with is the paint, but my dealer made good on it (seems
they had problems with some bad primer, which
caused the red not to adhere as it should).
In a nut-shell--have a massey, luv it, & highly recommend it. Good luck with whatever
