hmmmmmm,thanks,blu,gonna have to try that.
Training dogs...
Yeah he can push some buttons, but I like him and he knows alot about duck hunting. I see him as an all around good guy, but like Bear said, "has the tact of a cotton mouth".
No problem, and like I said, he gets all fired up when I pull out the collar.
Good luck guys, only three more weeks. I sure hope it gets cold in a hurry.

I admit some of my comments could've been viewed as inflamatory, but what I got from your posts was a sequence of 'problems' and possible antecdotes for others not encountered, yet. Your initial post mentioned problems, tips, tactics, ideas, potions, spells, and whatever someone else 'feels' is relevant......next, you just want a good hunting buddy.....then you brought-up e-collars (as if you have already established the need for one)......then force fetching.....then Richard Wolter's 'foreign' vocabulary .......then you said something about 'mounting' dogs?.....You might want to use another term, for that......'just ain't a pretty picture. I understand.....what you're trying to do is to establish dominance, but the treatment you discribed sounded more like 'gang rape', until I read Peewee's post to see if BOTH of you were wierd.
So you see, given the progression of topics brought-up....I had little doubt that your dog was "doomed". From what you've described since (if I go soley on what you said......and since I don't know you well enough, I have no reason to think you're not truthful)....that's not the case. So pull yo panties outa yo Butt! Have a good season and good luck with the dog training.....I'll keep my nose to myself, next time.
For what it's worth....you might consider an E-collar with variable intensity at the transmitter (like a TriTronics 'Flyway' model)....it'll save you more frustration than any money you save on models without that feature.
Tact of a cottonmouth......I agree....that's not somethin' I'm real proud of and I'm really tryin' to work on that....thanks for the other favorable comments......no harm intended towards anyone, guys.

Obviously, it's NOT....so I don't understand your defensive posture. In your response you convinced me that you are aware of many of the common mistakes that folks make when they get too anxious and expect too much too soon."IF that is the case.....".

Anatidae,
I just pulled 'em out and man what a wad!! I do appreciate your comments and I'm sorry that I found some of the a little grating(water under the bridge)so don't go off in a huff ("keep my nose...").
I guess I should have made my original post a bit more specific. I stated some of the things I was interested in learning about, but I was also wanting other members to share with each other, not just me.
That all said, I don't want an e-collar, but I might have to, in which case I'd like info. Now, how Peewee and I love our dogs is our on business (jk!!!!!)
Thanks again and I wish all a great season.

Thanks for your kind response.....I don't really know what I do that gets some folks so fired-up.....that's not my intention. Folks that are 'new' to the site think I'm a real 'dickhead', then after a few weeks, they begin to understand what makes me 'tick'. 'Wish they would tell me what THAT is. 'Could be that I see black or white....there IS no 'gray' area. That makes me seem like a self-proclaimed authority.....I don't handle that any better than anybody else.
I'm not goin off 'half-cocked'....I just regret there was a misunderstanding to begin with. Peace man! Enough about 'ME'....sorry I disrupted the great discussion.......'hope someone will pick it up and offer some more suggestions.
Again 'Blu', good luck with the pup!

If you can't train a dog without an ecollar, you can't train with one. An ecollar isn't a last resort, an ecollar is part of an entire program, and should be impleted as such. Anti-did simply wanted to make sure you weren't gonna strap it to old fido and wait for him to blow you off again. When someone asks for help, and dismisses what everyone suggests, the natural thing is to decide this person already has their mind made up. I didn't read his suggestion as anything other than a caution if you hadnt thought it through, instead of being angry you should have thought they guy loves dogs.
Right on about a pinch collar brother. MUCH better on a dog than a choke chain, even though it looks awful. And you have the benfit of controling how much pressure, and nothing works better for teaching heeling cause dog learns how to turn the pressure off, something you soon after teach the dog.
I got a good artical on the larynex damage for chokes vrs pinch collars if anyone wants it, email me. What do I know...if i was given only one tool, itd be a heeling stick! Don't leave home without it! travis

Hey guys,
Guys, look, I didn't mean to take comments out of contex or seem to dismiss any of them. I also don't want anyone thinking that I would hurt my dog. I love him like a son. I understand Anatidaes concern that a person would just zap a dog. That's the main reason I haven't gotten one yet. I thought they were still the old type that would "burn" their skin. I understand from what I have read is that they cause irritation.
Thanks for the concern and thanks for the wishing of luck. I really do appreciate what has been said.

Dog training tip for ya jeff.... if ya ever git busted training, where you aint posed to be training, a heeling stick slides right into the barrel of an empty shotgun barrel! What stick? I didnt have no stick out...bwhahaha. Besides, the rule is for EXPOSED training aids!
Ya'll be nice sometime and jeff will tell you about magic dog training elixer. travis

HEy, only one way to teach the new puppy and that is in the field...never leave him at home if you think he will screw things up,,,you just might not take him with a group. Nothing like seeing a first live retrieve. Saw a first retrieve for a 7 month old lab 2 weeks ago pheasant hunting in SD and it was wonderful.....took a puppy last weekend to opening day of Oklahoma duck season and it helped my 6yo Yellow pick up a portion of the 36 ducks we killed...Buy the book water dog....It does wonders..Careful on the E Collar if u get one. Before shocking your dog, shock yourself on every level....Also, if u ever get mad , put the tranmitter down...Meant as a reonforcer, and not for punishment...It can be your biggest fan or your worst enemy and can become enemy very fast if not used correclty....I'd never leave home without mine, as I have 100% full attention when she see's me reaching for it to put it on...Collar wise you might say, but thats ok too....dont have to keep up with the transmiter. (went 6-6 in UKC HR tests and 1-1 in AKC prior to stopping the tests)

Yes, and what Anaitdae did not tell you is that he has a very good dog Golden himself....(that will bite)
How is Sprig by the way A ?....Darn good thing your wife trained him so well huh...or u'd be a paddlin' wading fool .

'You mean Miss Congeniality? ......That's my wife's dog, by the way. You wouldn't believe it...she's actually not wantin' to fight everything in sight(the dog). That wasn't something we were very happy with. Now, she just chest-bumps everthing with four legs and black hair, tryin' to get'em to play. 'Got her alot more socialized thanks to some patient fellas at 'training days'.
She's figured-out that she's more athletic than most of the dogs she comes in contact with and it's more fun to piss'em off with a bump n' run game of 'catch the Swamp Collie', than fightin'em. Eventually her opponent gets pissed ('cause they can't catch or get 'position' on her) and give-up either outa frustration, defeat, or pure exhaustion. (Sprig weighs 63 pounds and has a 46" vertical leap.)
Last year we were settin'-up before dawn and heard this awful commotion down the slough.....went down there and she had a 40# beaver by the knap of the neck....had its front feet off the ground, slingin'-it side to side, tryin' to snap its neck. Jeez! 'Damn thing coulda killed her with one bite! We limited in 8 minutes that morning. While we unloaded our guns, Anne looked over at Sprig (she knows when we unload guns the hunt's over)......went right back to where she left her 'playmate'. of the day. The FUNNY thing is....when we got home, Sprig was really 'pissed' about such a short hunt (and probably feelin' a little invinsible) and when I let my old bird dog outa his kennel, he wandered a little too close to Sprig and she jumped HIS poor booty.
Yes, Anne has done a wonderful job with the dog (aside from the early aggression tendencies AND considering how inexperienced she is at trainig/handling)...Sprig does what we need her to do in the field. She's not as polished as some o' ya'lls dogs on 'handlin'....but she's got drive and enthusiasm and is a tireless hunter.
Funny you should mention wadin' and paddlin'.....Anne's takin' Brandy (16yr old, retired) and Sprig to La, next Thursday (to the duck camp). I'll see them on the weekends until the ducks come down, then I'll join them for the remainder of the season ('til Jan 20th). Then, we'll finish the season out in Mississippi. If I do any hunting over here, I MIGHT BE wadin' and paddlin'....as you say!
'Good to hear from you....take care! 'Glad to hear you havin' such a good season, already!

Anat,
You've got to tell me how you get your dog to jump so much (excuse me, how your wife gets her dog to jump so much) Drake must be just lazy. He hasn't learned that he has the ability to jump vertically yet. He will jump horizontally, but he tries to climb everything instead of jumping vertically. Any advice on the best way to teach him that he can jump? It annoys the stew out of me. He has plenty of drive, but instead of jumping, he just stops and tries to climb (especially in the back of my truck).

Damn, 'Goose'.....you know how to put a fella on the spot....what a 'Pal'.
Drake, we didn't really 'train' her to jump. One day we were in the garage looking at something I was fixin' to do to our duck boat when Sprig walked-up and showed interest in what was goin'-on inside the boat. Anne just stepped-back, gave her some room and tapped on the front deck. Sprig exploded straight-up and cleared everthing, landing on the front deck.....What we doin', guys? was Sprig's expression. We were so shocked I got my tape measure and put it on the mark...46". (that's the boat on the trailer in a gravel garage.) Maybe someone else has some pointers on how to get your dog 'airbourne'.
