Re: Texas Quail
Best wild Quail hunting I've experienced in some years is in Oklahoma. Getducks.com has a good outfitter there.
Helping ducks have a bad day since 1961.

Thanks, Pat. I've heard of some day lease, tresspass fee stuff in Texas but have never been or pursued it. Our Oklahoma quail hunt is fully-guided including lodging and meals, $350/daily ($400 with duck combo). Kennel full of hard-charging pointers for if/when the clients' dogs tire or need a break covering 35,000+ exclusive acres of prime, western quail habitat. We got up 37 wild-bird covies in 3 days last late-December, not to mention a really good duck hunt one morning.
Ramsey Russell's GetDucks.com® It's duck season somewhere. Full-service, full-time agency specializing in world-wide wingshooting and trophy bird hunts. Toll free 1-866-438-3897. Visit our website to view 100s of client testimonials, 1000s of photos.

It can be arranged that children under 16 and spouses go South Dakota pheasant hunting with a paying guest and pay only a per-bird fee while there.

Kansas has a state-sponsored program called WIHA (pronounced wee-hah) Can't remember what the acronym stands for, but its where the state leases farm land during fallow rotations exclusively for public-use access. Millions of acres throughout the state. Contact Kansas DNR and request a copy of their free WIHA book for a by-county map of all properties.
Have hunted it succesfully for quail and pheasants years ago. It's my understanding that quail have experienced the same decline in KS as elswhere, primarily to long-term fallow which subsequently reverted the habitat to relatively quail-poor plant communities. Of course I haven't proofed it first-hand, it's been along time since I was willing to travel that far to cold hunt properties that may, or may not, have birds and that likely had been heavily shot if they did, in fact, have good populations of birds. I sometimes miss those adventurous days.

Re: Texas Quail
I went to Kansas a few years back (3 or 4) and we got into a few quail, and being total rookies at the pheasant end of it, it took us a couple days to figure them out. Not to mention we were hunting in an extremely thick crp property and the birds literally came out from under your feet. Pushed them to the end of the field then they held to the absolute last minute.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
