Decoy Paints

Postby Bud Wendel » Wed Jul 01, 2009 8:00 am

I am looking for a place or ideas to get decoy paint to touch up some mallard decoys. Any suggestions? My son wants to work on them so they are ready for season.

Go to Wal Mart and pick up latex paints....have them match the colors if you can. Get flat latex for body and satin finish for the greens and whites. Finish with a can of Krylon 1311 matte finish, 2 or 3 coats...that's what I would do if I were you.

The green, whites, yellow and black of beaks are what needs the most work. Thanks. Any other suggestions are welcome

I've never had any luck painting plastic type decoys. The paint usually peels off half way through the season.

I have used the Herter's paint from Cabela's. It's a bit more expensive but it does last a couple of seasons.

I am still trying to find an airbrush rig that I can use to repaint my decoys. I have some with chipping on the heads and some that are faded.

I bought decoy paint from Cabelas or Bass Pro Shop, I can't remember which. The brand was Parker. It worked out very well. I think it was about $20 for enough paint for 2 dozen dekes.
