Captains License?

Postby Hayes » Mon Jun 15, 2009 7:01 pm

I was just curious what all it took to get your captains license? I pulled up the coast guard web page but as far as I can tell it does not call it a captains license, there are a bunch of different courses not sure which one it is.

For instance the person that captain/drives the boats on the coast that go out looking for dolphins or deep sea fishing.

You are looking for a 6 pack license. It's typically about $1500 for the study course then another $800 or so for the test, then just a much bigger insurance policy for your boat/truck.

For the standard 6 pack... The course is for OUPV (operator of uninspected passenger vessel). I took the course and now have my license. I believe that I have about a total of $1,000 tied up in getting the license minus the insurance and the state charter fishing license... I recommend going to the actual class. Trying to study by yourself and then going to the CG examination center to take the tests in my opinion would be a pain!!!

I did mine when i lived in FL 9 yrs ago ( which i have let lapse due to not using or needing) but at that time Seaschool is what i did and it was only $490 9 night cousre then took the test all the same day for $80 and you have a yr to pass all three test and you can take them three times (which that was the seaschool test which is not exact sane test as coastguard but is approved for the license... Now,there is a home study course for the test from the coast guard (which is a harder test ) $40 for the course..... it is www.captains.com.....FYI
