DU vs. Delta Waterfowl
DU vs. Delta Waterfowl
I have heard alot about these two organizations for along time, but I can't tell you truthfully the difference between the two. I know why they were created, but what makes one better than the other? Could someone tell the pros and cons of each in brief and why some hunters support one and not the other.

To me Delta Waterfowl does the things that can help us down here in the South.....I will grant That DU is helping on hatchers in the North but it also seems there trying to change a flyway that has been part of the eco-system for years...
Hey I'm a Member of both... someone help this fellow out on the specifics of each heck i would like to know more also..

Quack Killls!!!!!!!!!!!
You guys absolutely crack me up. Decals?? Sheesh, I guess there's no need for any type of rational thought, y'all have cool looking decals!!!
Delta Waterfowl used to be good at what they did. Then they decided that they needed parts in a couple of plays where they didn't belong. Founders of DW were all about research. DW today has hitched its name to a couple of research projects and that fancy logo that apparently has so many of you infatuated. Predator control and "support" for the duck hunter. That's about all I've heard from DW lately. Haven't heard about DW researching recent pintail or scaup declines. Haven't heard about any DW research detailing the increasing snow goose population, or more specifically, how to keep the damn sky carp from killing themselves off. Not saying the research isn't being done, but they're sure not making sure that the everyday duck hunter is aware that DW is aware of these very real problems facing duck hunters.
Ducks Unlimited is one of, if not the largest, conservation organization in North America. They raise more money for the ducks and put more ducks in the sky than any other non-profit conservation organization out there. But because you guys haven't been killing what you think you're owed, (that's a whole other rant), you've decided that DU sucks and DW is the hot ticket. After all, they trap foxes. At least, they have in the past. They stand up for hunters' rights. Hate to break it to you boys, but so does DU. When the anti's were trying to get sport hunting eliminated on National Wildlife Refuges, guess who was among the first to stand against them, you know, besides the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, that other organization y'all love to hate for no good reason. That's right, DU and USFWS, as well as a host of others, DW included, I'm sure, were the ones that said no. So much for DU supporting PETA.
Is there more habitat in the central portion of the Mississippi flyway now than there was ten years ago? Yes. Can it have a negative impact on the hunting in the MS delta in years of less than perfect weather? Yes. Is all that "new" habitat beneficial to the ducks? Yes. But you don't care, cause they're your[i] ducks. My suggestion is this: Move to Missouri or Illinois. The Dakotas would probably be even better. If killing a duck, or should I say, [i]lots of ducks, is that important, maybe you should just go to the birds. Or you could wait for some weather. Eventually, we will get a winter that moves birds. When that happens, Katy bar the door, those MS boys are gonna put a hurtin' on the ducks. Hopefully, no matter which option you choose, you'll stop bitching about how bad DU sucks and how awesome DW is. Neither sucks. Both have their own niche they need to fill. Support both.

DU has built habitat in the south, but as I am informed it was done with Govt program money to make a profit as any concratctor would do. It did not come out of contribution money or other avenues, it is but another way to generate money for DU. Contractors who then subconracted the real work out, a feat that any local non profit organization serving Mississippi in both mission and monetary usage to it's fullest could easily do themselves.
Claiming that DU has built habitat for the ducks in the south is akin to saying the painter of a house he contracted to paint also paid for the house. It is a deception that is widely misunderstood among the public.
I have personally had a DU biologist look me squarely in the eye and tell me point blank that DU is just here on this project to make money, funds that come out of Govt programs earmarked to be used right here in Miss.
It's taking from Peter to pay Paul. It's already conservation money, but it has a specific destination, Mississippi. DU interceeds and changes it's final destination, powerful enough to stop well meaning local programs from competing for the same funds. I dont think Mississippi interests need this final detour. There is a very dedicated system of habitat developers in this state who do not need DU or anyone else's help to design develop and implement magnificent wetland habitat projects.
There are many other half truths in what DU claims they do.
It's akin to a political party in their ability to do one thing and say another.
Their approach may be productive in many areas, but it isn't how many people choose to conduct themselves. I grow weary of the
"it's better than nothing" justification for their behavior.
If Mississippian's knew how much money is diverted from this state by DU that was earmarked for use in this state, they might not see DU the same way. What percent of the state duck stamp money is sent to 1 waterfowl way? Again, that is already conservation money, and it's money generated here in Miss by Mississippians. DU robs from that coffer as well. In fact DU takes more of your money than you know.
To date their northern holdings are so fractional that it is incredulous to state that their efforts will protect a duck population that only mother nature herself will dictate fate upon. I myself support DU, but it is not without clinced teeth to do so.
It is one thing to be an extrodinarily beautiful woman, but that is the last thing people should be talking about when she hasn't had a bath in a month.

When WINTER comes!!!!!!
Say what you want but I just believe until we start having winters like we had 4 or 5 years ago the ducks will not get here until our seasons are up. I don't believe for a minute that the flyways are changing. The waterfowl just reacts and goes with the weather at hand and if it does not lock up then the birds stay put. Just my 2 cents!!!!
Assuming that you are correct, please explain ducks before thanksgiving.
Also, look at the snow accumulation this year as opposed to the last in historical data and tell us why we dont have 8 million ducks in our laps.
If it snowed enough to cause a polar ice cap all the way to St Louis, most of the ducks would be in mexico.
The migration has changed, if you don't believe that, then you haven't been paying attention to data coming from Oklahoma for the last several years.
Hunting land prices out there has doubled in the last three years in value, just like it did here when the ducks would use it. If you can believe what you see in the field, then look at the economic indicators to see what is happening.
They moved over. They can move back again, but how to get them to do that is anyone's guess.

Would you be so kind as to identify that biologist as I personally know the majority of them in Ms. and would like to know how DU makes the money

Du has started catering to the liberal, freeloving, whimps, that don't want anything to be harmed on the planet, in my opinion that has totally screwed this country up. It was put here by the big man for me, you, and who ever can to kill it, eat it, and live on it........ if it flies it dies, if its brown its down.....take no prisoners. THATS RIGHT!!!!!!
When it come's to duck calling and duck killing its the indian not the arrow!
