Flies?

Since moving to the Delta last year the flies are horrible around here and flock to my labs like something crazy. They gave me some stuff to put on their ears but it doesn't help. Is there anything you can put out to make them go to the neighbors? I can keep all the crap picked up and they are still everywhere. Just didn't know if there was something I could spray on the grass or something.

they have some stuff at the co-op you can buy its something you can sprinkle on the concret and it will kill them its blue about the size of bird seeds if i can find the name i will let you know but we put it in our barns to kill them and works like a charm. the sprays dont work

I am sure its out there, I dont remember the name of the product but we used to use it in the barns and feed lots to keep flies down. I remember spraying it as a morning chore after feed and watering the stock. Co-0p or feed store should set you up

Also most co-ops have fly traps.(Not the sticky string, ones that have bait in them and they fly in and cant get out) These have worked by my kennels wonderfully.

Mossy Island's wife (at Doc Johnson's place in Greenwood) recommended some Adams fly spray for horses. I've been putting it on my bulldog and have to reapply every 2-3 days. I also bought some fly traps from wally world that you fill with water and hang around the pen. Traps just got put up yesterday but the Adams spray works great.

We are past the little roll traps, I would have to hire someone to switch them out a few times a day.

+1 on adams spray. I can't vouch for flies but it sure does keep the fleas and ticks off.

Buffalo Gnats or Black Flies

What they are?
Black flies are tiny blood-sucking flies in the insect family Simuliidae and are often called buffalo gnats. Contrary to their name, black flies may be gray, tan, or even greenish. They usually breed in fast moving water of streams and rivers and are tremendous pests of humans, domestic animals, and wildlife every spring in northern areas of the United States and Canada. In Mississippi, buffalo gnats are usually not a problem, but every so many years outbreaks are reported. Lately there have been numerous reports of buffalo gnats attacking chickens in Wilkinson, Amite, Isaquenna, and Warren Counties. There are at least two pest buffalo gnat species in Mississippi – the southern buffalo gnat, Cnephia pecuarum, and the turkey gnat, Simuliim meridionale.

What harm can they do?
Buffalo gnats can cause death to chickens and livestock by nuisance effects alone. There have been reports of deaths of birds and livestock due to heavy swarms attacking them, causing them to stampede, trampling younger animals, and sending them crashing into structures. In addition, suffocation has been blamed for some deaths in chickens due to buffalo gnats clogging the respiratory tracts. Sometimes wild birds and poultry have died from a toxic shock syndrome caused by black fly feeding. In addition to the nuisance effects, certain species of buffalo gnats may transmit various diseases, including leucocytozoonosis, a disease of turkeys, geese, ducks, and sometimes chickens.

What can be done?
Fortunately, buffalo gnats are daytime biters and rarely venture indoors. So, one thing you can do is go inside if the gnats are biting. Providing shelters for poultry may help since the flies don’t like enclosures. There are on-animal products labeled for biting fly control which can be applied directly to chickens. Many of these products contain the active ingredient, permethrin. One example is PermectrinR spray insecticide (remember to read and follow all label directions).

Repellents containing DEET have been reported effective for humans (but may need to be re-applied frequently) and wearing light-colored clothing may help keep the gnats away. People being tormented by buffalo gnats should be encouraged by the fact that the adult flies only live 3-4 weeks and should go away during hot summer.

the fly traps that you fill with water work great, but i does have a stench so give it to your neighbor

If your dog has a collar get a ear tag that they put on cow's Co-0p will have them,cut 2 slit's in tag and thread on to collar make sure it will touch the skin.This will help your dog with fleas,tick's,fly's and knat's.

We don't have knats here. I hear they are terrible...much worse than gnats.

Fly Off, which is sold at the co-op and Tractor Supply will keep em off the dogs. I haven't had to kill em yet but have used this stuff and it works.

I don't know how to spell but however you spell it they are worrysm I think I'd rather have flies than gnats.We are in tater country and get them big green headed gnat's and when they get bad it's hard to eat when without fanning them out of the way between bite's on the upside I guses it just extra protien when you swallow one.

Try some Permetherin if you can find any. Just mix with water and spray on dogs. Will keep flies off for a month before having to re apply.

Think this maybe what we spray on yard for mosquitos. I got some martin houses help with mosquitos but they don't like flies.
