Ever Seen A Deer Backbone Like This

This is the backbone from a doe one of my friends harvested back during primative weapon season. Have any of you ever seen one fuse together like this or have any idea what causes this? Friend said she wasn't acting strange or like anything was wrong before he shot. No signs of any previous injury either.
