Re: Bait casters??????????
Calcuttas are the shat no matter what you fish for.....A Cardiff is also the same reel for a cheaper price......Ambasator 5500 will do in a pinch also
Life's too damned complicated to make it too damned complicated
Re: Bait casters??????????
reds and specks - abu 6500
bull reds or offshore - abu 7000
freshwater - jig pole or my little spin cast
calcuttas were always to expensive for me.
Now when it comes to a rod, I used to always fish with Fenwick. I got a couple Daiwa's I found on clearence that I like. Buddy of mine uses All-Star faithfully, but I think their quality has changed to some extent. Hate Shakespear (sp?) with a passion.

Re: Bait casters??????????
mostly shimano
1 700 for bigger rigs like a popping cork or top dog and smaller snapper rigs
1 400, 2 cardiffs, and a low profile for all inshore and bass fishing
2 pinnacles low profile for inshore and bass fishing
I used to swear by abu garcia but had 3 blow out in one summer and never used them again.

a friend recomended them two me about 4 years ago and I bought my second a week later, had all my reels stollen 2 months later and bought my current two shortly after, and they are great esp. for the money.
Re: Bait casters??????????
I've got an abu torno and my pops has a Ion. Excellent choice. I did buy a shimano combo deal an academy. It was the best 60 I ever spent. The anti backlash nowadays is the bees knees. If I would have had that 20 years ago I wouldn't have wasted so much time pickin at those Brillo heads.
No, i don't want to know you ---- teul

Re: Bait casters??????????
Jeff recommended a Shimano Curado to me a couple years ago. Now I have three of them and love them. Smooth and the 7:1 ratio is burner. I also just bought the big Shimano 700 series Calcutta baitcaster. It is a hoss... I'm going to try to pull the bottom of the TN river to the surface this weekend with it...

Re: Bait casters??????????
I use the ole idiot button kind. Just push the button, swing it over your head like a chopper blade and let go when your ready. No backlash. I can throw skip cast and if your bait is going to far, just hit the button and it stops. He11 you can't beat that. Slap on some 14lb test and a buzz bait and slammin whammy you got yourself a rod-n-reel.
She hasn't let me down yet. Total cost of rod-n-reel, 16 bucks. Use the money saved for drinks and more buzz baits and worms. Come on down. I got the boat.

Re: Bait casters??????????
When I really got into fishing I started with a 5500C3.To date personally I have not caught more fish than with these reels, I have about 5 of them. My problem with them is they aren't made now how they were 15-20 years ago, still like my older ones, my newer ones don't hold up.
About 3 years ago I made the switch to Shimano, and I won't go back. I use mainly Calcuttas, but I have a Curado, and a guy "left" a Chronarch on my boat and told me to keep it? Those are WAY too expensive for my tastes.
I also have a Shimano dual speed 30 series for offshore, and two Penn 50 wides. Shade if you can't pull the bottom of the river up, lemme know the 50 wide will!

Re: Bait casters??????????
The main problem with the ABU's is the Worm Gear grinding after about 11 Months. I like the pinnacle's but Mostly I fish with The new Fluger President model. I love them. They throw light bait really well. I've had 5 of them for 4 years now. No Problems with them yet.
