I have had yamahas and hondas with good luck from both. The foreman is a good bike for the money but has no locker in the front end and no independent rear suspension which gives it no ground clearence. That is why i bought a grizzly 700 when i was looking 2 years ago. Yamaha has the best belt system of the autos. I have been in water over my racks with no slipping. In your price range i would look at the big bear 400. It is manual transmission, has ind sus, has a locker, and comes with mudlites. Their are several good bikes to choose from these days but i still see more problems from polaris than any others mentioned.

Could not agree more i love the grizzly i had and the one i own now.... they by far have the best belt drive system out there, i have never had my belt slip at all and if you do get water in the belt drive it is as simple as pulling the plug on the bottom and putting it back in and your ready to go again

honda foreman 500, manual shift 27-12 and 27-10 on it. it is as tough as the old 300 fourtrax

I myself could possibly be looking this summer. All I have ever owned is Honda and thats all I will ever own as long as they keep doing me right. Anyone know where I can find a good 350-400 4x4? color and year dont matter

Honda, honda, honda, honda, honda....Best build bikes ever, my old fourman that is my toy bike has been sunk underwater probably 10 times, rolled a few times, and been through more mud than any bike ever should in it's lifetime and the only thing I have ever done is maintanence (oil and filters) and replacing the brakes. It's 12 years old and fires up on the first try everytime, even after sitting in my barn for 6 months. Will never buy anthing but a honda, my buddies have gone through 2 and 3 different bikes whereas my honda is still purring along like it always has

I have pulled logs stumps and trailers that were WAY to heavy for my honda rancher. It is used and abused but still going strong. No problems cranks every time.

if you go to lo range (with mud tires thats where your going to be anyway) they're a drum riding the belt to prevent ANY slipping. And only time ive ever got my kodiacks wet is when I had a vent hose knocked off in the ice. Pulled the plug, ran the water out of it, and a zip tie later I was riding again. The belt is a NON ISSUE, you're only going to smoke one if you're in hi gear pulling loads and why would anyone do that anyway? A lot less to go wrong with 2 pulleys and a belt, than a hydralic or eletric transmission, a LOT less to go wrong. To me a belt is the ONLY tranny I want, Im not shifting a bike.

Everyone makes good engines. You'll tear a lot of other stuff up and the engine will still be fine.

Rear suspsions are a big point to a lot of people. independant rear rides good, gets good traction. Not as good for pulling a load, and you can't kick the rear end out for 'spirited riding'.

rice straw and water is going to tear some stuff up. Its part of it all. Get all the straw off, and change every grease there is the week after duck season, and you'll save yourself more money with any bike in repairs than making the wrong choice.

Mine is a 03 450 kodiak. When i was looking, I knew I wanted true 4wd, auto tranny, and lo range. At the time, it was the best choice in all of that. I really didnt think I needed that big a bike, but the 400's at the time didnt have a lo range. And lo range is key (to me) to keep from tearing stuff up. I run 27 inch outlaws during duck season, and your not going to even spin a tire. Only way to stick it is to hi center it. travis

I found a new '06 Honda 350 4 wheel drive a few months ago at a dealership that had been marked down to sell. They had a showroom full of the new 420 bikes and this lone '06. I bought the '06 and am glad I did. From what I've read I think the fuel injected Rancher still has some bugs that need working out. That said, I still think it's probably better that a lot of other bikes out there. It retains its resell value and can be worked on pretty easy.

im partial to yamaha. I have a 1985, im like the 3rd owner?.....? that runs good...however started having some carb probs this season....but until then thats the only thing that has gone wrong with it (I know the history on the bike..only way Id purchase one that old) . Id buy yamaha again. All my buds have yamaha as well and have had no issues with theirs...one guy has a grizzly 700, two have big bear 400's really nice bikes....one friend however has a Honda foreman...that thing is a beast!!!!!

If buying new I wouldnt purchase anything but a yammaha or honda.
Guy I went to school with had to put like three sets of axles in his suzuki, and another had an arctic cat that never ran
