Vehicle Opinion/Question
Vehicle Opinion/Question
Have a question for the wise Ducksouth folks. I have a 99 Tacoma that is paid off and newborn twins. I will obviously need a larger vehicle in the near future.
I have an option to buy my brother's 01 Yukon with only 60,000 miles that was my grandmother's previously for around $8K. I would keep my truck.
Or I could buy a used 4 door full size truck, in the $15k to $20k range. Would sell the Taco in this situation.
On the Yukon, I know the history since it was brand new, but is older model that I would normally look for, but would be cheaper than other option. Any ideas or suggestions?

Re: Vehicle Opinion/Question
You know the vehicle history? How long do you plan on keeping said "new" vehicle? Is it still sound? If so, save the money and get the '01.
Nobody owes you anything.
Re: Vehicle Opinion/Question
My grandmother got it new, then my brother bought in when she passed. It is loaded, with leather and all the bells and whistles. But is an older model. I am a little leary of having two vehicles to keep up with, but can save some money.

Re: Vehicle Opinion/Question
Depends on how long term you would keep the 01 or newer vehicle, If your wanting to keep it for long term and use the taco as a hunting and around town by your self vehicle then that is the route to go. But if your looking to keep it for just a few short years and turn around and sell it then get something newer just for the purpose of not loosing to much money when you sell it for a new vehicle. Trust me on this this my dad did this to his and moms vehicles and when they got newer they paid alot of money because what they had was worth little to nothing. Just my .02
Re: Vehicle Opinion/Question
I'd take the yukon for $8k. When it gets old and worn out, use it for a hunting truck, and then buy the newer vehicle.
Re: Vehicle Opinion/Question
I wouldnt pay $8k for an 01 yukon.

$8k looks to be about the going rate to me. Some a little more, others a little less. I'd buy the yukon, but I'm cheap

easy decision. Yukon.
Especially when you look at other factors, like insurance...

Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.

Get the Yukon. I would'nt leave my wife and kids without a way to go if they had to. Kids = extra errands and sometimes emergencies. JMO
Re: Vehicle Opinion/Question
yukon - i'm in an '01 with 112k that was bought new and still going strong. 60k on an 8 year old vehical is nothing so there shouldn't be many if any issues with it. plus you'll have room in the back that is covered for diaper bags/luggage/boxes/whatever instead of them being exposed in the back of a pickup. you'll get about the same mpg and have about the same in maintenance costs as the truck.

Thanks for the responses. Forgot to mention the Yukon is 2wd. Do ya'll see any problems with that on wet boat ramps?

I would buy the Yukon for 8k. If your not happy with it after a little while you can sell the Yukon and Taco for something else. You will have a little more upkeep with 2 cars, but make sure you tell your insurance co that you don't drive the 2nd one much and raise your deductable to 500 or 1000 and that will help out.
Also with a Yukon you have a lot of weight on the back wheels so slipping on a boat ramp won't be as bad as with a truck. A Yukon may come standard with Positrack in the rear end and that will make a world of difference. If it does not have posi, you can alway add it. I did it to my 90 GMC..

mine is 2wd but has traction assist that helps when tires start spinning - cuts the motor back and controls the wheel spin - if you don't want the motor to cut back so you have some umph to the spinning tires, just turn the traction assist off.
Traction Assist System - Low Traction Light
Two-wheel drive 1500 series equipped with the Traction Assist System. The Traction Assist System works with your engine and transmission to help prevent, and under more extreme conditions reduce rear-wheel spin. If one or both of your rear-wheels looses traction engine power is reduced. When the Low Traction light illuminates on your Instrument Cluster it means this system is engaged. You may notice some noise and reduced acceleration when it is engaged, but this is normal. If the light stays on during normal driving you should contact your Chevrolet dealer.
Traction Assist System - Traction Off Light
Two-wheel drive 1500 series equipped with the Traction Assist System. The Traction Assist System works with your engine and transmission to help prevent, and under more extreme conditions reduce rear-wheel spin. If one or both of your rear-wheels looses traction engine power is reduced.
If the Traction Off light illuminates on your Instrument Cluster it means you have disengaged the system. A button to the left of your steering wheel showing an icon of a car with skid marks behind it is how this system is turned off and on. Press the button and the Traction Off light should go out. Press it again it should come back on.
When your vehicle is stuck in sand, snow, or mud and you have to rock it to break free, you should turn your Traction Assist System off.

I just traded in my Tacoma with 170,000 miles on it and bought a new 4 door chev. After trade in and evrything was said and done i financed 20K. they gave me 3K for the toyo and i put down 2K. personally i wouldn't buy a used vechicle right now, its a better deal to get a new one. Realize i didn't say it was cheaper to get a new one up front, but in the long run it is and is a better deal. Just my 2 cents.
