HELP ~ Dog chewing up everything !!!!
HELP ~ Dog chewing up everything !!!!
I have a beautiful 2 year old male lab. He has a very bad habit of chewing things up. He's destroyed door mats, shoes, neighbors dog food sacks, baseballs, you name it.
Today he got a hold of a delivery that was sent to my wife with some very expensive clothes and stro'ed them all over the yard. Needless to say, we are both in trouble.
PLEASE HELP!!!! What should I do?

I have one word for you....
CRATE.
Seriously...if you aren't watching him, crate him.

Second work.......KENNEL.......with a concrete slab. Now how could the dog get in trouble if he was crated or kenneled?

Re: HELP ~ Dog chewing up everything !!!!
play with the dog more when you are home, start some obedience training, take the dog for walks around the neighborhood..sounds to me like the dog is board during the day so chews. A kennel would keep the dog from getting to the unwanted items. Buy some chew toys that the dog is allowed to chew, correct/punish for items not to be chewed on. At the end of the day, labs like to chew things up...

I'm with mudd on this one. By just crating or kenelling you are only treating the symptoms. You have an anxious and/or bored dog. Regardless, they will eventually release that energy or frustration.... Sometimes on boxes, furniture, but hopefully never- people.
I would treat the problem. Run the dog, play with him, give him something to do. After you do that, then I would crate him.
Just what I would do.

Sometimes they'll even eat the house
........

Re: HELP ~ Dog chewing up everything !!!!
I agree with the kenneling and will also 2nd the fact that the dog nees to be walked or given some sort of activity to burn off the excess energy. Another trick I can tell you is wood. Go buy yourself a 2x4 and cut it into 6-8 inch sections. Throw them out with the pup along with the toys he is alowed to chew when you don't have him kenneled. I have founf that the pups seem to like chewing the wood versus the house, mats, doors, shrubs, ect.............
Training on basic obedience is great advice as well.

Our friend's "yard Lab" - no training at all - ate half the seat off their Gator. I'm not sure what else he's gone through. . . . at least one package from LLBean that I know of that was left at the front door. They are quite destructive when bored.

Yep, he's chewed through the wire kennel too. It's wired all up with different wires and even some 12g romax now!
