HEART WORMS

Is anyone else having heart worms problems.
this is the second time my male lab has tested postive in a year.
Heart guard is not working for me.I have to try something else.
does anyone on this site use Advantage Multi?

Yes ,,,,several of us use it . Are you saying your dog tested positive after treatment ?

he was treated in May of 08 and tested neg in July.He was put back on Heart Guard and was tested again Wed. and is Postive.He is very heathly and showing no signs.Im going to get a chest x ray nest week to decide when to start treatment again.If the x ray shows to be ok i will start treatment the 1st of june.if not i will do the treatment asap.This has really pissed me off this time. Heart Guard said they would foot the bill and give me a two year supply free.I told them i would never use another chewable again.

Yes, I'm north of Oxford and had 3 of 5 test positive this Feb. All had been on Heartguard.

My vet recommended switching to Advantage multi. I made my first application yesterday and had one dog shake it all off! ugh...

Good friend's dog just got em with heartguard as well.

I am not familiar with Advantage Multi. Is it about the best stuff out there now? They sell it by dog weight. What if the dog is significantly larger that the biggest size they sell...like 110 pound dog and 80 pounds is the largest they make it for. Any problem there?

It comes in smaller doses, so you would combine two doses to equal the dog's weight.

Unfortunately I've heard of dogs on other preventatives also coming down with heartworms. Hopefully the combo insecticides (imidacloprid and moxidectin) in Advantage-multi along with a different type of application will be more effective.....at least for the time being.

The heartworm problem is getting really, really bad in the Mississippi delta area.

My vet (Baton Rouge) is seeing LOTS of breakthroughs on HeartGuard, so I switched over to Advantage Multi a few months ago (after testing neg). It's so bad, she's considering dropping HG from her clinic. and from talking to other dog owners that've had breakthroughs, I haven't been impressed with HeartGuard's "guarantee". You have to document every dose, etc. take a picture givin' it them....kinda pizzes me off with them

If I had more than two dogs (or a kennelfull), I'd go the old Ivermectin/polyglycol route, since you can dose 'em at higher levels...

A month's dose of ivermectin costs roughly 20 cents. How much are you paying for the heartguard and similar tablets? You can buy it at a co-op or farmer's supply.

.10 cc for every 10 lbs and mix with water........never had a positive test.

Kevin why >2 dogs? I have one and use it, always have. Its less expensive, i can get it at the feed store any day of the week, and it works! I"m sure someone will dispute its use, but, myself and I am pretty sure everyone in our training group uses it with good results.

Advantage M is more expensive than I'd like it to be

I live in a little subdivision and have a neighbor who's a crazy cat lady during the summer, the fleas can get bad around her house and they try to migrate I sometimes spray the backyard and use a bit of Red Ryder repellent on the cats and frankly, my ex had a real flea phobia and insisted on always using something

Who knows??? I might make the switch back to straight Iver (money talks ya know)

I had two simultaneous positives on Interceptor about 3 or 4 yrs ago. Treated those two and have been on Ivermectin ever since with no breakthroughs.

I dose them a full cc per dog. An extra small dog, like a 50 pounder, I will knock it back to maybe .7 of a cc.

I have been using straight Ivermectin for over 20 years with out one positive. 1/10 cc per 10lbs of body weight.

Mark, How many positive dogs have come up in your area though?

It seems our genral area (Ark, Tenn., Miss all near the river) is developing a resistance, I've heard of a large kennel in Arkansas using straight Ivermect still had breakthroughs.
